Could some give me some pointers on how to get rid of all the orange in the headlamps please on a Bugeye? :-)

change the indicator bulbs for silvertec ones (or equivalent) is a start

 

Yeah I've got some coming, but what to get rid of all the orange.

Does anybody know please. There must be loads od people that have done it.

 

remove all the screws
& other ancillairy buts
Put in the oven for even heat distribution
Carefully prise the two parts apart
ensure noone of the sealant touches the silver or glass surfaces
unscrew the silver portion
unclip the dome
screw the silver bit back in
push the two light parts together
reheat in over
& if you want add extra sealant to ensure water doesnt get in

SIMPLE !

 

Cool, so basicly do it the same as everyone is doing n their blobeye's.

It's not as hard as you would think mate, the hardest bit is getting the lamps in and out of the car. I cheated and bought some off Ebay, detangoed them, then got my local dealer to swap them over.

140 for 15 mins does it nicely! Just take your time, pop them back in the oven every so often if it starts to stick again.

The detangoed on is fitted with an Osram Diadem bulb, with a blue pearl like colour when not lit, or you can fit the Philips ones which are silver.

 

Very nice that blue effect - where did you order them from??

i havent tried doing this to my bugeye yet. Can i use a hairdryer to heat the lamp rather than sticking it in the oven? Also what sealant would you recommend i use? thanks

 

Yes, Ive used a hairdryer on a set Im doing at the moment.Just slowly move it over the edges and you should be able to slowly prise it apart. You may need to stop and use it again as it seems to cool down quite quickly. I didnt use any sealant as i wasnt too sure about it coping with engine bay temperature. But I would be interested in anyone elses suggestions that have.

 

is it possible to break the orange dome and remove it in bits without having to go to the trouble of splitting the headlamps?

how does this mod fare with MOT's? its a mod that i'd like to do but dont want to run into any MOT issues

Does search still work? I'm sure I remember someone posting about doing it with needle nose pliers thro the bulb hole. Could have been a blobeye though I guess. About a year ago I guess.

 

yep it does seen someone mention it on a thread but that was about it... so just looking to see if anyone else had tried it and could maybe pass on a couple of pointers... as the de-tango threads i found envolved a touch of cooking

Sorry I wasn't being facetious. I recall comments about search being turned off for non full members and I didn't have time to try it earlier.

Now I have and I'vw found the thread I was thinking about, it was this one. Even a post from the guy who did it, might be worth a PM if he's still around.

I found breaking the orange dome shaped plastic part easy with long nosed pliers. Just push it inside the headlight, no problem .

i was nervous about putting mine in the oven, so ended up buying some already done on ebay. my originals are sitting safely in the shed ready for when i sell - if i'd thought/known about the long nosed pliers option to break up the orange dome , i would have tackled it myself. oh well

 

Hey all, i have just taken the orange from my bugeye.
Hint: Give the orange dome a sharp tap (from the bulb entry point) with a screw driver to free it lose into the housing.
Then first with the long nose pliers, try and snap off the retaining lugs as these scratch the inside of the lights reflective surface - PATIENCE is a virtue - then set about slowly snapping away bit by bit.
NOTE: i tried to pull a wide sliver out and cracked the outer ring of the reflective surface, so seriously slowly slowly catchy monkey!
The Removal and instalation of the headlight itself was a doddle on my 52 plate Bugeye.
Off to a well known store to get the bulb replacement........

 

Going to try this on days off. Think I'll try the breaking method 1st then if not the oven.

Can't imagine the wife would be chuffed of me using her prized SMEG for car parts! (although she doesn't use it for much else of late!)
