I have noticed a strange electrical smell which appears to be coming from the alternator. I have a 99 turbo with only 14000km. Would an electrical short cause this or is the alternator on its way out?

 

it could be that the alt is charging flat out permanently, we had a turbo that started to eat alts and when we checked it out we found that although the batt was fully charged it did not tell the alt which thought it was flat and kept charging it we changed the batt and it has been ok since.

 

Smell seams to have disappeared. Is it possible it could have been damp or water?
