Simple question: Is it safe to use PIAA H4 Super White 80/80W bulbs in the standard UK/STI headlights and with the respective wiring looms?
The only model that may (but no one so far managed to confirm this with certainty to me) have better wires is the STI Type R (and maybe RA) as the manufacturer specifies 80/80 bulbs as standard.

I have re-read as many threads on the subject from the past, but apart from various speculations there still seems to be a 'disparity' of opinions. I have no intention of spending £100+VAT on a pair of bulbs just to see bent lenses and melted wires after an hour or so night driving.

It's not a definitive answer, but one of the guys at GGR assured me that the standard loom can handle these bulbs without problems. Anything over 100w and you're treading on thin ice.

I've had the piaa plasma blue in for 6 weeks ( 80/80 's) and loads a night driving and i've had no refector or glass problems. Before that about 9 months in a ford with no problems ( MMmmmmm that must be a first !!!!! )

Thank you both for your assistance so far. Call me biased, but for some reason I do not feel comofrtable with much (apart from real quick delivery service!) GGR sales personnel say. This may simply be some bad memories from my Ford days ages ago, but, ultimately they are here to sell and not take responsibility.

Kev's words give much more reassurance, but I would like to here some more people saying good or bad things and, perhaps, we can get this topic out of the way for good.

I have had the PIAA Plasma Blues in my Type R from feb and have not had any problems.

I would certainly trplace the bulbs with the same again and I havent even felt the need to have the PIAA Spots fitted that I have!

The standard Type R bulbs are 100/80.

Before chaning any bulbs, it's really worth consulting this site ...

 

I run the PIAA BC2 bulbs which are rated at 80/80 and find them to be great. Big improvement & no melted wires or probs. I have had them for approx. 4 weeks & 2k miles.

I had halfords 100/80 (i think?) before and I find teh PIAA to be a big improvement. My personal view is that they are a must have if you have the driving lights. Otherwise when you go to dipped beam it takes too long to adjust.

I've had 100/80s in since I bought my MY97, thats 2 1/2 years with no problems (except replacement lamps) what so ever and I live in Scotland which have longer dark nights.

I've had the BC2 bulbs in for a week now, and they really do make a big difference. The dipped beam now actually illuminates the road ahead. They put out so much more light, I have adjusted the headlamps downward a notch so as not to dazzle oncoming drivers. Main beam with PIAA driving lights as well is just AWESOME! So far, no melting problems yet!

 

I have fitted 80 w dip 130 main in my 93 wrx i have bought and fitted a small wiring loom that runs these bulbs that donot burn out the excisting wiring loom mail me if any one is interested .The main beam now floods the road in front with light and i recommend them

That is a good link, tells you all the reasons why to avoid particular types of bulb but I couldn't find much to suggest what is best to upgrade to. (It is a big site though).

Sorry to re-open an old thread but I have just done a search and found this topic of particular interest.

Situation is this. The headlights are shocking we all agree. I have put in the Halfords '30% brighter' Xenon bulbs but they have not really addressed the problem. I don't want a driving lamp conversion.

Questions are:

1. Where can you get the PIAA H4 80/80w Super Whites from and how much are they?
2. Can anyone provide an update on the safety (by that I mean wiring and lenses) and performance/value for money issues?

Just a little warning
I had PIAA 80w/80w superwhites fitted in my sti when it came from japan(unknown to me at the time)please do not start your car with the lights on,it's very expensive!!!as the bulbs have a tedancy to blow.
