I have fitted some Halo headlights to my car but i cant get them to work properly yet.Alcazar has given me some help but i thought i'd post in here to see if anybody has any ideas.

Hmmmmmmmmm.
Right: your car is a classic, so will have had H4 bulbs in originally, meaning H4 connectors behind them.
Did you have to cut them off to fit the new lights?
You can get both main and dip to light up together.....you need a relay, standard 4 or 5 terminal, on/off, preferably with fuse.
Run a wire to terminal 85 on the relay, from headlight main beam. You can connect to the main beam wire with a Scotchlok.
Run a second wire from terminal 86 to earth, or battery -ve.
Now take a supply from battery +ve to relay terminal 30, or via a fuse, if your relay doesn't have one.
Finally, connect terminal 87 to both dip beam bulbs, AS WELL as the normal connection to them. You can do this via a Scotchlok, or cut into the wire and insert screw connectors, then tape everything up watertight.
This should produce dip on it's own, and main and dip when you select main.

No mate i didn't cut the connector off because you plug that into the wiring harness for the new lights.I am not great with electrics but i'll try and get my head around what you've told me.

Alcazar i've tried this today but i keep blowing fuses before i even switch the lights on.I've double checked the connections and they are exactly as you said.The only thing im not sure of is "connect terminal 87 to both dip beam bulbs, AS WELL as the normal connection to them." What i have done is connect terminal 87 to the + wire to those bulbs,is this correct? What do you mean by the normal connection to them?
Is 86 definately earth and 30 positive?

85 and 86 are the coil as AL says connect one (86) to earth and take the switch feed to 85. When you turn the light on the relay will operate. Terminal 30 is the supply (usually direct to the battery with an in line fuse)
Terminal 87 (and 87A) are the switched 12 volt supply to the light.
I think you may have connected 87 or 87A to earth somewhere by mistake if you are blowing the fuse

There is no 87a terminal its a 4 pin relay.The connections are definately correct i've triple checked them.I'm using 15 amp fuses do i need bigger? If i disconnect all the wires apart from earth and positive would this confirm a faulty relay if the fuse blows?

Which fuse are you blowing? The one on the relay? And before you even switch on lights?
That would indicate a faulty relay. Especially if, as you say, you're sure that terminals are connected as I said.
When I said that you should connect terminal 87 to each dip beam bulb as well as the existing supply, I meant connect the wires from terminal 87 INTO the existing dip beam wire, somewhere behind the bulb.
Are you using the relay which came with the kit? If it did?
If so, are you sure it's an on/off, not a changeover relay?
That would indicate a faulty relay. Especially if, as you say, you're sure that terminals are connected as I said.

I've definately wired everything correctly then because i have connected to the wire behind the bulbs.
The fuse thats blowing is an inline one that i've fitted between the battery and the relay.They didn't have any fused relays.
I asked for a standard on/off relay so it should be the right one.
As soon as i put the fuse in it blows without me turning anything on.
Edited to say there was no relay with the kit

The fuse is probably blowing because Subaru wiring to the headlights is the reverse of the normal sysytem. When the lights are turned on (dip) what would mormally be the earth is actually positive. The column stalk actually earths the filament. This means that if you tap into the main beam circuit you see +12v when dip is on and it's earthed when main is on. I don't pretend to know the answer but I think Alcazar's system will see 12v straight to earth on the dip beam circuit.

Can you split the relay ? it will be really straight foreward to see whats happening if you could.
If the subaru wiring switches earths how does it differentaie between dip and beam as they are a common earth on an H4 bulb ??
As in if it works the way you are saying ,by the stalk switching an earth instad of applying 12V would you not need separate earth connections to each filament ( dip/beam ) of the headlight bulb ??
Pull all the wires off the relay and connect a piece of wire to 85 / 86 hold it across the battery and see if the relay clicks.
If it does put the 15A inline fuse in the circuit and if it blows the fuse get another relay - the relay operate coil should draw about 200mA ish IIRC

It worked exactly as you said mate except i didn't even need to connect to both dip bulbs just the off side.
