Have a look in the lighting and electrical section. This recent thread might help.

Short answer is yes, they are considered better. I would consider the Philips Vision Plus or the new Osram Silverstar. The 50% rating refers to the amount of light visable at certain distances at the side of the road (50 and 75 feet I think), not to the actual overall brightness of the bulb.

Bulbs are 9005 and H1 from memory, mine has Sylvania bulbs as OEM fit, Sylvania and Osram are the same company. OEM bulbs are 3200K according to the reply I got back from Sylvania.

PIAA are good bulbs but not cheap!

andy,
i know the osram bulbs were the tops in the auto express test, just, does this mean to say then, that the upgrade to osram/philips wouldn't be any better ?

IMHO you would notice a difference between standard fit bulbs and the best from Philips and Osram. What I think you would find harder is to notice much difference between say, the Philips Vision Plus and PIAA.

Speaking from personal experience, I've used Philips Vision Plus (which I've always rated), PIAA, good, but no better than Philips (certainly not when you consider their price and the number I had blow) and now Philips Xenon HID. HID is obviously much more expensive, but they are very good.

As I said before, I would look at Philips and Osram as good value and worthwhile improvements over the standard fit items.

Even if the OEM fit bulbs are Osram, they won't be the Silverstar ones, they will be the cheapest bulbs that Osram produce.

I've fitted the Philips VP to my 03MY and there is an improvement, still need the Prodrive driving lamps when they are available though. Mike Wood where are they?

Question

I'm sure I read that the bugeye, and blobeye models will/would be offered with HID headlights as an option?
They can have 'em in Japan, anyone know why we can't?

My WRX 03 has Sylvania (Osram) 9005 which is main beam and Philips H1 as dip, not that impressed with them as OEM fit. Looking at trying Osram Silver Star as they came first in recent Auto Express test. Has anyone tried these bulbs yet?
