is there any way of spliting the glass from the rest of the lamp as the height adjuster has fallen out of its mounting and is rattling about inside.

Yes, although I haven't done it myself. Remove headlight, and use a flat screwdriver to prise off the metal clips that are round the edges. The headlight then comes into bits, but I'm not sure if you need to run a knife round the seal to break the sealant. Remember NOT to touch the reflector face AT ALL.

In some of the other forums they recommend warming the headlight in the oven at 180-200 F (repeat F) to soften the adhesive.
