Indicators/Hazards
Don`t know what model car you`ve got oj, but he told me to definitely switch the positive and negative terminals on the multiplug. Don`t know if it`ll damage the relay if you don`t, I didn`t want to find out. Mine`s a 94 WRX btw.

Let my little laddie mess about in the car. I know, daft thing to do!!! Anyway, he thought the indicator stalk was a great plaything, but when I took him out of the car, both the idicators and the hazards when tried, came on and stayed on, i.e. no flashing.
Course, I started to panic. Phoned my dad who knows a bit about car electrics, and he said it could be the relay. Went back 10 minutes later, and everything had fixed itself, both hazards and winkers blinking away to themselves.
What I need to know is:
Has anyone else came across this before??
And, is my dad correct, might it have been a dicky relay??
And, if so, which relay is it, and is it in the box under the bonnet??
Thanks,
Andy.

Well the switches are just that - on/off switches - it's the relay that does the flashing thing. So if they came on and turned off with the switch, yes it would suggest that the switch works and the relay was playing up.
Haven't had a Scooby for long enough to know where the relays are yet (really should find out I suppose
) but they are generally in the fusebox.

Hi,m8, got that spoiler on yet?
It does sound like a sticky relay. Mine is under the dash, driver's side, right up near the top, and was an ABSOLUTE PAIN to get out when I needed to change it after fitting a towing kit. I could only identify it by setting it flashing, and feeling to see which relay was clicking! No way could I see it and feel it at the same time

Not got the spoiler on yet, going to organise getting it painted this week. I`ve only had it about 8 weeks!!!! LOL.
I`ve found the relay, under the dash, just in behind the centre console. What I`ve now got to establish is, (A) is the relay on the blink, but not all the time, as sometimes the winkers work (B) could it be a bad connection on the multiplug going into the relay, as one of the connections looks iffy, (C) is there a dodgy connection between the indicator stalk and the relay multiplug, or (D) is the indicator stalk faulty.
After the way the laddie was pulling at the stalk, I think it may be (D). Hope not.
Going to look at it now, I`ll keep you posted.

any news on your problem...
as my car has decided to play up, both indicators don't work now, but the hazards okay.. the fuse keeps blowing when I replace it.. I suspect that it may me by indicator stalk causing the problem...
anyway, interested on how you are getting on with your problem..

Problem solved. Turns out it was the relay. I had a bit of a job locating a new relay, mind you. I originally tried Halfords, (cos it was 7.30 at night, not much else open), nothing listed for the Impreza.
Then tried 2 motor factors, they said dealer only part. Phoned Lucas, they said nothing in the book, bring it down, we`ll try to match it up. In the meantime, phoned Subaru at Hexham, said he`d have to quote me on a UK car, fair enough, expected nothing else. £39 + vat!!!!! Holy smoke!!! Had none in anyway.
Went down to Lucas, they couldn`t match it up. the + and - pins on the closest they had were opposite to the one off my motor. They also said that with the new part being electrical, they couldn`t take it back if I bought it and it was no good. So I bought it, fits loads of motors from an Aston Martin to a Capri, swapped the two + and - connectors to the multiplug, plugged it in, and bingo, all sorted.
Cost £10.12 altogether, but the hassle was immeasurable!!!!!
So if you`ve got bother, try the relay first, may end up cheaper than a new stalk. Wouldn`t like to hazard a guess how much one of those is!!

Glad you have sorted out your problem...
I tried another relay, which I purchased from A1 breakers and arrived the next day, great service, as I phoned them at around 16:00hrs.. Anyway, this did't work..
Do you have the relay PART NUMBER for future reference....
So, will try this weekend to see if I can find any break in the wiring.. I am sure that it's the stalk causing the problem....!!
Well done..

I`ll get my old relay out of the car tomorrow to find the part number. BUT, the side with all the writing on must have been rubbing against somewhere, because the middle of it has faded. I`ll try to see if I can make out all the lettering.
If you find it is the relay, drop me a line, I`ll get the no. off the box of the new one, and run you through which wires need to be altered.
It`s really dead easy, it must be, cos I`m no whizz kid with the cars!!!
Keep us informed as to how you do.
Cheers,
Andy.

The unit I got was a Lucas one. Ref no. SFB 162.
From what I saw in the book the guy was looking at, it fits loads of different cars. Like I said before, minor modifications to the multiplug, and it works fine.

walwal - suss it, found my problem and fixed, everything back to normal.. it was the wiring that a freind had added in for the rear fog light, the wire at the rear of fog light switch was just touching each other, thus causing the short.. I didn't check the rear fog, spent all day Saturday without.. but spotted that my rear fog was working this morning, and hey presto and found this to be the fault.. over the moon now.. had vision of the car being be in a garage for the week to fix the fault.. so now back to cleaning the car..
