Wiring problem - HID Morettes
Hi guys - looking for advice please.
I've recently bought a set of HID Morette lights from a well known Subaru specialist store. It turns out a part or some wiring was missed out when the kit was delivered. I can't fault the installers, who were my local Subaru dealership, they installed the kit properly as it was delivered. *They* pointed out to me the unexpected behaviour of the lights...
The HIDs don't remain illuminated when I select main beam. As I understand it, dip-beam should be HID lights only. Main-beam should be HIDs and the (inner) 'conventional' lights. Currently I only have the 'conventional' lights on main-beam. How do I keep the HIDs on?
I gather this is something to do with adding in an additional relay, but I'm no autoelectrician. Suggestions, please!?
This particular Subaru specialist hasn't come up with any suggestions yet, despite a couple of phone calls and a week or two to think about the problem. Can you guys get to a solution any quicker? Can't be that tricky, can it?

Hi Ben
HID H4 units do not have any high beam facilty. The standard connector only takes current from the low beam side. When you select high beam, the supply to the low beam side is cut off as running both filaments in a normal H4 causes the bulbs to overheat.
Morette lights have a traditional H4 feed system in the outer optic and a H2, high beam only, feed to the inner optic.
What is needed is to install a relayed supply from the high beam feed to the two inner lamps, bringing power to the HID units when high beam is selected.
No parts were missing from the kit and all of this was clearly explained to your installer at 1pm in the afternoon. It was again explained to you, when you rang after you had collected your car.
Why your installer chose to ignore this information and let you take your car away with the installation unfinished is a matter for you and them. I certainly would fault your dealer as everything was clearly explained to them on the phone, but either they chose to ignore me and give you your car back unfinished or I was speaking Greek that day.
It would also be possible to create the high beam supply with a diode between the low beam and high beam on the H4 plug connector, but I doubted that they would have any diodes.
I am sorry if my information was not clear and please ask your installer to call me again if he still cannot grasp what is required.

Reading what Pete has written, looking at my kit make a lot of sense now. The instruction book supplied don't help much. Looks like the dealer has fitted them wrong. Surely they must have wondered why the centre (main beams) weren't working ??
Pete,
Thanks for the information, although I wish I realised you sold them so cheap
