I put the 'phillips vision plus, 50% extra light' in my 91 gt legacy as a staight swap over and yes they work very well and IMHO with my budget, make it hard to justify the £300 plus for all singing all dancing metal halides
I bought mine at £20 per pair from 'Topspeed' in New Haw / Addlestone, Surrey

You could do a lot worse than www.powerbulbs.co.uk. Philips Vision Plus or Osram Silver Star headlight bulbs are the 50% bighter white halogen type at about £20. Postage was very fast. Best of all, you get free Philips sidelight bulbs, as the original ones really look rubbishly pale and yellowey next to the new brilliant white headlamps.

They are as easy to replace as you say - only tip is that you need to squeeze the sides of the connector before you can pull it off. Sidelights are a bit more fiddly but basically just one screw to remove and then tug/slide the whole unit forwards away from the car.
