Central Locking

Went to the dealers today on another problem.Whilst in the car on a road test mentioned to the mechanic that the CDL wasn't working and suspected switch in drivers door."NAH" he went " it will be the Timer Door Lock Relay just behind the glove box its known to fill up with water over time the fix is to just buy a new box then position upside down"
When i got home took out the glove box there was the relay box disconected the wiring popped the box open and literally the whole PCB was rust and corosion it had even rotted through most of the legs on the resistors.
Bugger me they do now what their doing.
Silly *** though i forgot to ask for a price.
Any Ideas any one.

Oh. I think this is the fault behind the non functioning Central Locking on mine... What model do you have? I've a '98 with a recently replaced heater matrix - hence I think it's this relay board that has gone. And also, how do you get the glovebox out?

My Model is a 95 so a littleolder than your own.
You actually don't need to take the glove box out to get at this little blighter. If you come in from under the the glove box but tight against the kick panel on the left just under the glove box you will see a little black box that measures 3 inches long 1 1/2 wide and 1 inch deep. thats the timer door lock. you can just unplug it and slide it of the hook that keeps it attached to the bodywork. Once you have it in your hand the end that was plugged in to the electrics can be prised open with a screwdriver and the internals slide out. If yours has happend recently your might still be damp and just need drying out (but i doubt it). As i said before no dealer near me has any in stock and apparently neither has Subaru UK but if you get some joy Let me know as i am desperate for one as well. The Part Number for this piece is 88201FA030.

Had this problem twice with my 95WRX, but only after the windscreen had been replaced. Both times I got a second hand unit from GradeA Subaru (ask them to check that it's not water damaged) for £20 & £25. Second time I moved the location of the timer unit up above the glove box and side on and have had no probs since.

Pleased you got sorted.
My investigations revealed that poor windscreen seal can cause the problem. Also there is a large grommet in the nearside front wheel arch which part of the wiring loom passes through. GradeA reckoned that it could be this grommet that was leaking. I did notice that water ingress only occured in very heavy rain or after very heavy rain i.e. when there was a lot of standing water. This would suggest that maybe water was getting in behind the front nearside wheelarch liner. Does your carpet get at all damp in the passenger footwell?

My central locking locks the 3 other doors (not driveers) whenever I'm driving along, can still unlock it from the inside manually.. could this be caused by this unit being faulty in mine (MY96)

The Drivers side door is the only door that doesn't have a motor in it in standard form. Normally when you get a CAT1 alarm installed they install a motor in the drivers door so that the alarm can activate the motors to all doors and give total closure.This then also makes it possible to centrally lock all doors from the passenger side as well, apparently. I was told this recently by an alarm installer.

I am only in the third week of ownership of my car and haven't had the pleasure of driving in any thing more than heavy drizzle.
But thanks for the info as my part turned up today and all is working fine. I wander if Miles has had any joy.

doesn't look like the the one i have just replaced.
The one i replaced was about the length and width of a swan vesta box of matches but twice as thick.
It also has Door Timer written on a white paper label.
Where your arrow starts at the top look behind that panel or fish your hand around and you will see or feel it mounted just there.
As i mentioned in earlier post Grade A Subaru have some in stock.

OK Doc, any idea where to CDL box is on a `98 ?
I have the same problem. If the cenral locking does not work then a pat on the roof sorts it out.
Its indearing to begin with (dog like) but it`s a pain now.
