Hi, following on from another post, where I had total electrical failure whilst driving, it happend again today, and had to be recovered.
Now, the battery voltage with engine running is just battery voltage, 12.2v. No sign of alternator charging. If I disconnect the alternator, there's 14.6v at the alternator post.
So, is the alternator shot, as it's not got the oomph when connected, on load?
Cheers, Tim.

When you turn the ignition key two clicks, ie: just before the starter turns, is there a charge warning light on the dash?
There should be.
Without it, the alternator field windings are not excited and the alternator produces no charge.
If it's not there, try replacing the bulb.

Hi, yes the lights on. I replaced the alternator 5 years ago, when it went the charge light came on dimly at first. This time no lights. In fact, the car drives fine, then everything goes, speedo, rev counter, lights etc. car goes lumpy, stalled, and wouldn't start again. After sitting for an hour, it did restart, just, but died moments after.
The alternator has 14.6v off load, just not on load. Strange.
I did have an intermittent speedo light just before it went first time round.

Hi, I've just been reading the other thread, electrical gremlins, and I think a new alternator is called for.
The voltage at the alternator drops to the battery voltage when running, so it is connecting to the battery to charge it, but doesn't have any oomph to charge the battery. If the voltage remained at 14.6v, then I guess the charging circuit would be at fault.
