Question GPS Speed camera detectors

Greetings to you all.

I have a friend who has recently retired to the Dublin area of Ireland and he wants to know if there are any speed camera/camera van/speed trap type detectors that are designed for Ireland. He has his UK "snooper" type detector and is aware they are illegal in Ireland so is after something Ireland specific along the GPS/Geodesy type we have here in the UK.

Any help gratefully received.

Cheers

Tim

From the little I know they use the same equipment as the UK (GATSO's etc). As its illegal to use a detector I don't know if a GPS device is going to keep you any more on the right side of the law. My guess would be that your local garda won't know the difference and fire the book at you anyway.

Not quite what I had in mind. he needs to know if there is an Irish version as there is no point in him getting geodesy as the updates/downloads are just for the UK.

Wink GPS Speed cameras?

Not in Ireland yet, to the best of my knowledge. Normal laser detectors should work. GPS detectors, how do they work? Is it a case of a logged location of a gatso camera and then a notification of an approach to one?
I think only certain areas of dublin are only just mapped for gps and it will be a while before the rest of the country is, mind you dont take my word for that, so it's hardly worth it spending a heap of money on it. But my advice is dont speed. At least for the next few months as the gardai are upping the anti on speeding drivers. They are increasing their checks big time as the government has a big desire to decrease the amounts of deaths on the roads.
Tell your mate to wait until he's in Ireland and then find out locally. That's the best he could do.

There are not many fixed cameras in the south - mostly guards hanging about motorways with laser cameras, so a GPS system will probably be next to useless
