Default Stelvio Pass - the Scooby way......

HI everyone

I am organising a trip to drive the Stelvio Pass in the Italian Alps in September this year - likely start date Friday 10th September.

Due to my work commitments it will be a quick sprint there and back - with possibly 2 or 3 nights away. My plan is to set off early on the Friday on the Dover to Calais Ferry and drive to St. Moritz in Switzerland (about 660 miles from Calais) and set up in the hotel. Then spend Saturday on the Alpine roads including the Stelvio and Umbrail Passes. Then I have a choice (maybe influenced by other peoples ideas. We can either stay overnight and bomb back to Calais on the Sunday for return ferry Sunday evening (back to work Monday) or we take the Monday off work too and spend another full day in the Alpinr region - maybe take in some scenic routes past the Matterhorn/ Mont Blanc or take a drive into Milan (which isn't too far away from Stelvio).

Whatever the final plan, I'm definately going to go for it. Please have a look at the links below to find out more about the Stelvio Pass. Please add your comments if you'd like to come along or have been there before and can offer any advice.

Have you worked out a ballpark cost figure for this trip? Hotels, fuel, food, booze etc?

I have mate.

circa £300 in fuel
£120 for return ferry Dover to Calais
then hotel/ food/ booze - say another £250 max (not priced up hotels yet though)

making £670 total

take a passenger and share the cost..

How about a couple of laps of the Nurburgring on the way back on the Monday? Its open 13:00 onwards and would round out the weekend nicely.

Now that's a great idea - would be a punishing weekend on the brakes - but well worth it. Take in an Autobahn on the way for max speed trial too...

Do you know how much it would cost for a couple of laps or so??

Try www.nurburgring.org.uk or the official www.nuerburgring.de site for info. Not very expensive by all accounts, and hopefully a Monday would be quieter than weekend?

How much interest have you had in this trip?

I know what you mean - mind you would you want to be a passenger to someone driving up a mountain road with 40+ hairpin bends....

I can see the attraction from the drivers point of view but not the passengers...they'd probably throw up.

We could make this into an annual event - just like the Elise owners have - I'd get a website up and running too.

Nice one Colin - that's about 3 of us now - still plenty of time to recruit more.

Great pics guys - that is what we need - plenty more scoobs....

What would you say to organising this for next year instead - September will be with us before you know and I have a Tek3 remap to take priority this year.

If we plan for next year instead then it will give us more time to recruit more interested Scooby owners.

Please let me know what you think and spread the word.

Cheers

terryb, I was well looking forward to this in september, but after consultation with her indoors, she'd prefer to go back to spain again in august!
so, as far as I'm concerned, next year would be a great idea, and would give us loads of time to save up and plan for a big turnout.
chris.

Nice one Chris - I was really looking forward to it too - but I think we need a good turn out to make it into something special and this way hopefully we can do that. Can you drop me an email to terry.buckel@btopenworld.com - and anyone else who is interested - then I can keep everyone posted on progress as I doubt that this thread will run forever.

Cheers

No mate, the one planned for july is just a small group of us, not the whole scooby club... But the terrain will be much the same - being Switzerland / Austria and Germany.

If you do decide to go then you will be leaving at the same time as the Lotus group so it would be a shame if we failed to meet up on the way.

What are your plans and do they tie in with any of our stops? See www.stelvio.org.uk PS new vids and links now available on the site.
