Generally the stereo/headunit is held in place by the cage, the front panel/surround clips to the specific headunit.

cage will be easy, volume button maybe not.

Might be cheaper to buy a replacement unit which will come with cage, plenty of offers on the bay.

it depends on the features i could get for the price.

i had an alpine ida-x313 in my old car, which had the features i wanted but the display was awful, so picking random songs, even when parked and it had my full attention, was a bit of a chore.

whereas the touchscreen on what i have now is the perfect interface (depsite it's ugly looking layout), however 1 DIN units with a touchscreen aren't cheap and i wouldn't pay those prices for something that has a horrible interface either.

want something that can charge an iphone4 so i can use it as a tomtom and a source for music.

Mate I bought myself a Kenwood headunit because I wanted to be able to control the tracks on my iPhone without haveing to mess with the iPhone itself. It charges etc and plays the Tomtom voice through the head unit using the proper cable and not the 3.5mm jack although there is that option as well.

The headunit was over £100 just a year ago. But the upgraded version to the one I had is about £70 now.

Let me know if your interested might put up a link to the place where I got it from.

Mine is a sony, it plays MP£ players via a 3.5mm jack in front, but later models have the facilities you want.

Look for end of line, but brand new models. Often to be had for 50% off.
