Omex do a range of different shift lights from about £65, I run one in my race car.
You can get either a single light that eluminates at a set rpm or a multi light that has a series of led's that can eluminate at setable intervals e.g. every 200 rpm upto the optimum.
You will really need to stick your car on the rollers so you know exactly at what rpm peak power is reached and set the light for that point.
Unless you are a serious track day addict or going to race the car I wouldnt bother, as you will never really get enough free road without some old fart in a Metro getting in the way to really exploit the benefit.

I can thoroughly recommend Omex gear, not just because I retial it below RRP 
It gets it's signal from your coil + and - (so if you have a coil per spark plug your buggered
) which means you can wire it into the back of the rev counter. You can set it in increments of 100 rpm. With the sequential you set the shift point and then the increments of the preceding lights, from 100 to 1000 rpm steps (closer the better IMHO).
I never thought I'd need one, after all I have a rev counter and can look at that, but I'd found that when you're in a situation up and around the redline, you don't have time to 'look' at a rev counter and so the shift light is very handy indeed!
They can also be mounted within the dash to give a proper OE look, if you're really handy you can mount them within the rev counter itself, although that takes some fidly work. Here's a pic of mine mounted between speedo and tacho, rather nice I reckon and very good visually
