Dismantling interior on MY99 - How?
#2
Open the lid of the middle armrest and undo the 2 screws, the handbrake panel will then come off.
Unscrew the gear shift **** to remove the gear gaitor, slightly pull and it will come out.
Remove the cigar lighter & ashtray and pull out the plastic centre concole surround, be careful not to loose the 4 metal clips that hold it in place.
Open the top lid and remove the s small blanking plates on the left & right and undo the screws, you can then remoce the whole box (needs a strong pull to come out)
I never tried to remove the side air vents but I think they are not screwed and just come out like this

The small demister vents are only about £4 + vat, and the other vents are about £16 + vat I believe .. just so you know what to expect if it all goes wrong.. I am planning same thing, and had same concerns

Well, honestly I'm not sure about the side air vents. I know that the whole top lid assembly (vents included) is held by 2 screws but not so sure about the side ones...
AFAIK and having a look at some ''explosed'' interior print outs I got from my dealer, there seems to be no screw(s) for the side air vents.
Be careful anyway and don't forget to put masking tape around the fixed parts when you remove the center dash parts, else you will have scratches all over the place....I know what I'm talking about!! and had to buy some new dash parts because of this and they're not that cheap and take ages to order....

With regard to the top lid assembly, what's the attachment mechanism around the bottom of the vents....I'm pulling with a rediculous amount of force and it seems fixed somehow at this point...some sort of plastic lug?...I don't want to end up having to buy a complete assembly....

crusher,
The top lid assembly is just held by 2 screws, the ones you can see under the plates when you open the lid.
The top vents are one piece with the lid assembly. Once you manage to remove it you can then take off the vents.
send me an email as per my profile, I can send you an exploded view of the interior which will be helpful.

To remove the side vents get something broad and firm like a scraper, carefully insert it under the bottom of the vent first putting a duster underneath to protect the dash and push firmly upwards and outwards at the same time. The vent should then come out bottom first . Once that's done the small door window demisters can be pushed out from underneath. Reassembly, as ever, is the reversal of removal
