If you are talking about what I think you are you need to remove the whole assembly including the box on top of the dash. I'm not sure how the cup holder affects things cos my 98 doesn't have one but open the lid, remove a screw from each side of the tray and PULL forwards very firmly. It's very well held and will come away all of a sudden so be ready for it. That removes the tray and surround complete with vents. Assembly, as they say, is a reversal of removal

Unhappy

I am experiencing difficulty removing the surround from the two central vents on my 1999 uk, does anyone have guidance for this ?
There are 2 screws on either side of the cup holder, on removing these I can't remove the cup holder and the vents are as firm as ever. ????

Cool

The cup holder has 3 screws, one on each end and one underneath, you need to remove the heater controls and the top pod, you will still not be able to get the cup holder out as the sides of the dash are still in place, I could not figure out how to remove the cup holder without removing half the car.

You dont need to take the cupholder out, the vents should pop out, may need some easing with a tiny flat bladed screwdriver, i took off my defi pod (or the lid depending on the setup), then there are 2 screws in the lid, take them out, should then just pop off.
