I've got a Impreza and I'm insured to driver any car third party with the owners consent.
So can I get a second car (old banger for work) and put it in my wife's name and drive it without getting insurance for err' indoors.

You will have to get insurance for the second car, as the car has to be insured. You can't just drive it under your Impreza policy.

Bumcrack (excellent username by the way),

I have thought about this as I have the same cover.

But you will find your cover is only third party. Somewhere along the line the car must be insured as I think you will find the owner must have a fully road legal car to be able to give you consent to drive it. I think you will find words to this effect anyway.

Damian.

I'm not to sure how you would stand on that, but each and every vehicle on the road has to have it's own insurance. Maybe if the car was in your wife's name, she may get done for no insurance on the vehicle.

I'm sure someone like Rum, in this line of work would be able to fill you in a bit more.

It's a real old banger (£150 worth), if it got nicked I wouldn't even claim, I just don't want to get done for no insurance, If I got stopped I was thinking I'd just leg it

Just checked my policy wording (AXA) - it says I have third party cover when driving any vehicle not owned by or hired by me. So I wouldn't be covered under my policy if I bought another car.

Been trying this on for years with rally cars, second cars, track day cars, company vans etc. The answer is NO the car must be insured in somebody elses name for you insurance to cover you.

PS Don't do a runner you stupid **** it makes you as bad as all the rest who drive cars without insurance.

The other car would also have to be insured in someones name to renew the tax ?

If its *that* much of an old banger, insure your wife on it 3rd party only, problem solved...

It looks like I'll have to do that. The wife hasn't got an no claims discount and it's going to cost me £400+ for a old, slow nail.
