Question

I have just got online quotes from Tesco, Directline and Privilege and surprise surprise they all came out to exactly the same! Even the qustions were exactly the same. Either they all use exactly the same software or they are all part of a cartel.

Has anyone else had the same results?

Royal Bank Of Scotland plc owns both Direct Line and Privilege. I assume Tesco plc owns Tesco and that they have an agreement with RBOS to administer their car insurance product for them.

They're all related. I called Direct Line last night - they gave me a poor quote but suggested I try Privilege. They in turn said that they'd give exactly the same quote and wondered why I'd been passed over to them, and then went on to suggest Tesco...

Yep, it seems tescos are better in low risk post codes and DL better in higher risk ones...

No idea why, just something I've noticed

From all accounts there are 30 postcode areas of risk nationally. 1 is the lowest, 30 the worst. I got a very competative quote from Tesco / Direct Line for a Type UK STi Prodrive with a performance exhaust.

By the way, my location was 22nd and comes in at just over a grand with NCP.

Anyone got the phone no for Tescos please?

I'm with Lancaster at the mo and last year aged 29 I paid £1100.
This year my requote is nearly £2000!!!!

The only thing that has changed is I'm now 30 and I've got 7yrs no claims instead of 6!!!! Robbing gets!

Time for a change.

cheers

Rich

Direct Line and Privilege are certainly the same company. Don't know about Tescos, as Direct Line/Privlege quoted me £680 fully comp, protected NCD etc. (in fact the girl at Privilege transferred me through to Direct Line as my insurance on my last car was with them). Tried Tesco independently and they quoted £1222 on the same car (MY02 WRX)!!
As it's got no mods, went with Chris Knott at £630

I think you'll find that all three are actually just agents and the
actuall insurance is underwritten by the same company, something like UK Insurance or to that effect. With Tesco's and Directline
you get a further 5% off if you use the Web. Even if you just get a web based quote then ring them and give this ref: you can then get the 5% via the phone.

Personally, I found Bell direct the cheapest. 850 for Protected no claims, full Euro cover and 150 excess. 37 living in Berks, 7 yrs no claims (but doesn't make any diff when reach 5)

Also, try Lloyds/TSB online. Just got insured with them for £589 with NCP, and the wife on fully comp too. No mods MY99. I'm 32.

Seriously worried. Friend was hit by a young lad whilst stationary in a queue of traffic. Claim was settled by insurers, after a long and pointless fight (Norwich Union Direct, give 'em a miss).

Friend is, however unable to claim back excess, loss of NCB and extra car hire because the other party's insurers are still refusing to admit liability. The police are prosecuting the other driver, who damaged two vehicles in front of many witnesses, including an emergency services driver. How much more proof of liability do they need??????????

This might sound like a rant (which I guess it is) BUT The other part's insurer was PRIVILEDGE. I am insured with Directline and (on my recommendation) so is friend.

Has anyone had to make a claim with Tesco/Directline/Priviledge?

They are undoubtedly cheap BUT my friend has been left some £1000 out of pocket for a non fault accident on a car very much less expensive then yours and mine. It is time we started naming and shaming insurers who don't deliver the service which they are paid for.

Just to chip in on the old insurance thing, I've found Privilege pretty cheap.

I'm 26, live in Essex, 7+ NCB, clean uk license etc, 1993 WRX, NO CLAIMS BONUS PROTECTION (which is usually £150-200) and I'm paying £1050.

BUT I've increased the excess from £300 to £600 cos I haven't claimed ever yet touch wood I won't have to :>

Ok here's an update.

Car: P1 with 18 inch wheels, ITG, Scoobysport back box and Brembo brake kit.
Me: sad old git of 48

Original quotes were for unmodified car, garaged 12,000 miles a year.

With the Mods it becomes a totally diferent picture. All of the companies want to know how much the mods cost? Why?, I ask, as they don't add any real value to the car as they are virtually straight replacements for the original parts.

Tesco - £1415 (50% more than the online quote for unmodified car)
Norwich Union - £1220 + (still waiting for the underwriters to come back with a price for the mods!!!)
Privilege - £973 (10% up on the unmodified quote)

Have't tried Direct Line or Greenlight yet. But I suspect the privilege quote will be difficult to beat.

Roger
