Saving with a CAT 1 on GL
My 1.6GL (MY95) is my pride and joy, EVO forum says that makes me sad, but I dont think I could do much better at 17y.o.
Standard security features = locks on the doors, so I worry too much whenever I leave her! Stoplock Pro is all that saved from theft from previous keeper.
So should I fit an immobiliser and/or alarm?
How much would Thatcham approved equipment reduce my insurance premium? Currently paying £1100 with CIS.
Cheers,
Scoobyster

I would fit an alarm or an imb at the least. I don't think that CIS give reductions for alarms and imb's though. Even if they don't reduce your premium it will give you some piece of mind.
You can get CAT1 alarms installed for under £300 at the moment.
Just out of interest. How much did you pay for the car and what do you think of it? I was looking at getting a 2.0 Sport soon, but I think that I will wait a few years and possibly get a turbo instead. Insurance at 20 (with 1 NCB) is bad enough on a Sport let alone a turbo.

Hi Darren.
Thanks for your reply, will have a look for some good alarm deals
My mum had my car from new on a lease scheme from her employer (NHS). When the lease ended (after 3 years) she bought the car for around £7500, a very good price at the time, but ridiculous when compared to today's prices! She got another new Impreza on lease, this time a 2.0GL as they'd stopped selling 1.6 and 1.8s in the UK. The first car went to my cousin, on agreement it would come back to me when I passed my test.
Performance isn't mind blowing, the 1.6 struggles a bit with all the weight of AWD transmition etc, it can feel perticularly slow if loaded with people, but alone I can move pretty swiftly. Handling is fun but safe and predictable, 4x4 keeps you out of trouble, I think with bigger wheels and better tyres it'd understear less too. My mums 2.0GL is a lot quicker than mine, and seems to grip better on wet roundabouts with Michelin Pilot rubber over my Dunlop SP200. They both are very reliable and pretty well screwed together. Fuel economy is the major downfall, I get just under 30MPG, but better on a long run.
Look into the insurance costs m8, you wouldnt regret buying a Scoob
What do you drive at the moment?
Hope some of that is helpful, ask away if you want more info.
Cheers,
Ben
Edit: Re read your reply and seen you have looked into insurance! Try the NFU or CIS for a quote, they seem to be the most competitive for young drivers.

At the moment I drive a Nova (Don't you just love them). The only reason I bought one was because it was cheap (£1000) to buy and it was in the lowest insurance group of the cars that I could afford to insure. My insurance, last year was close to £1200 TPFT but this year it is £570!!! Bloody big difference it makes with 1 year NCB. I am changing my car soon to a more sporty car (hopefully a 205 1.6 GTI or a Ford XR2i) to get more ‘performance’ driving experience. It will hopefully mean that I can keep to Scooby on the road when I get one
I put a post on Scoobynet about 3 months ago about buying an Impreza and worked out that I could buy, insure and run a 2.0 Sport, but my standard of living would go through the floor. So I have decided to save towards an Impreza for late when I can have both a nice (sorry gorgeous) car and still have a good standard of living. I had contemplated buying a 1.6 or a 1.8 but decided against it due to the weight of the car and the low power output (compared to the Sport).
I would look into the alarm deals at the moment. £300 inc fitting for a CAT1 alarm and Immobiliser is peanuts compared to your insurance excess, pain of not having a car, increase in insurance premium etc. if it was to get stolen.
