Default Elephant / Keith Michaels

After reading a lot of posts, I was expecting a great price from Gary at Keith Michaels for my WRX Wagon (only mod is cat back exchaust)
Turned out about the same as Elephant. I'm 46 with full no claims. 3 points and wife as a named driver.
Didn't have a lot of time to shop around as I was picking car up that night - will start getting quotes earlier next year.

Went with Elephant -I'd got their quote through the Confused.com site and after getting the price from Gary, was a bit hacked off - especially after telling the Mrs all week how much cheaper it was going to be by dealing with an insurer who know about these cars.
Anyway-done deal until next year - just thought I'd pass it on for the record.
Main thing is, back in a Scooby again - loving every minute.

Not sure what the increase was for the exhaust - I was at work and did not have a lot of time.

Don't get the hump Gary - I would have been extremely pleased to have gone with you had you been cheaper. You have obviously sorted a lot of folk out on here with good prices even with heavily modified cars. For whatever reason, post-code, circumstances etc - the price you came up with for me through Keith Michaels wasn't competitive. You can't win em all - but don't stop trying.

No probs, didn't mean to make it sound like i had the hump

The way i read your post (wrongly) was that we were pretty much the same price as Elephant, but you'd gone to them just because i hadn't beaten them by a lot.

remember, and insurance company is not only responsible for good prices, but more importantly good service in the unfortunate incident of a claim of some sort.
i know for a fact the Keith Michaels bend over backwards to help people deal with these situations, can you same the same from some thicko on the end of an elephant call centre phone????? - i hope so.

Not that there is much point in re-iterating how good and cheap Gary's policies are given the vast amount of space taken up on ScoobyNets servers by folk praising him/Keith Michaels, suffice it to say, I was insured previously with elephant with no declared mods (£780) and Gary covered me for £550 with alloys, exhaust, remap (343bhp), suspension etc etc all covered like for like.

All I can suggest is that perhaps other companies (like Elephant) are perhaps a tad more competitive to Gary's prices when the driver is an old guy, like the thread starter

For a 30 year old driving a high performance Impreza, there was simply no beating Gary/KM for me

Agreed.

My first years insurance was with Elephant which was ok at £1600, I didn't mind because I know that my area is classed as high crime because of the postcode and because of the car (Classic Import WRX) etc. The year renewal came through and it was £100 dearer even though I'd not made a claim at all. I phoned them to ask about it and asked about a quote for protecting my NCB. They came back with a quote of £2100!!!

I wasn't pleased, asked them to explain the frankly rediculous quote, the dozey git on the other end could get their excuse straight as it changed every 5 minutes so I told them to forget it. I call Gary up, 10 minutes on the phone, one call back £925 FC with 4 years NCB protected

Definately going to be calling Gary back in August. Does a top job

Yep, elephant renewal (with no mods declared) £1600 ish - Gary last year £795 (with protected no claim) and all mods declared.

Even cheaper this year

I found its not just about the price of the insurance, its the extras such as I.C.E. cover, legal costs etc In truth A-Plan was less than Keith Micheals for me but the extras weren't as good. Personally I think its better to have the extras when it does go wrong than paying less for the premium.

Blimey - can of worms or what.
Probably true, comes down to the fact that I'm of advancing years - lets say.
Thing is, I agree - terms and conditions and how they handle a claim is as important. I went against all my usual principles and didn't give myself enough time to get more quotes and consider all the options. I was at work so couldn't spend a lot of time on the phone and wanted to pick up and drive the car that night.
Next year, I'll do it differently - I'll need to if some of the mods I'm planning are on the car by then. I can just hear it "A what? A bump valve?" "No - a DUMP valve - oh forget it.............

Default Keith Michaels INSIST on Gary or your quote will be rubbish

Had a nightmare getting a sensible quote from Keith Michaels. Becasue I had a quote years ago from Jeremy ( was too expensive then and went with A-Plan) . Gary couldnt quote and because they are on commission ,quote was a no better than anyone else out there. It was 50% more than the current owner( insured through KM) who has 6 points and a recent ban Ive got 3 points from 2 years ago . Lesson in all this is INSIST to speak to gary. You should then get a decent quote . Its a shame for me that I cant get a quote from them now as only Jeremy can quote me and he wont budge. Ill try greenlight etc now and probably wont insure it through KM out of principle.

Very very very disappointing

I havent read all the posts on this thread so apologies if i repeat someone but from very personal experience it shouldnt always be the price people should look at, okay its great to save a few quid here and there but at the end of the day i went with tescos once as they were the 'cheapest quote' but then they bent me over and screwed me up the **** without lube when i got hit by a skip lorry, so basically what im saying is look at the 'cover' that is provided not just the cost as when you need help those few extra pennies you been spending may just save you alot of time, money and tears!!
