Default Driving cars in Europe - Insurance cover

I've noted on a few On-line websites - NU included that in order to drive your car with the same policy conditions (as in the UK) you have to pay an additional premium for driving it outside the UK - I'm talking about having say fully comp in France as I do in the UK

I only ever rarely take the car to France/Belgium and I thought that by law you had the same cover for these EC countries - is there some fiddle whereby the likes of NU are charging incorrectly for this?

Default

mine gives me 30days per year full cover in Europe. I just call up to let them know when & where. All my old insurers gave the same iirc.
