first insurance where/how?
Son is 17 and looking at getting his first motor.
What's the best (legal) way/place for getting him insurance once he finds a motor he likes?
He's looking at Polos/other hatchbacks for around £1k-ish.
A couple of speculative quotes have been astronomical!
Thanks

was in same boat last year and had to foot the bill - the joy of parenthood, my car is with A-Plan so rang them for son's the rate was £1600 but got a better deal off Norwich Union - rang them back and spoke to Darren on 01635 874646 and he matched it. It realy depends on who you speak to so care required!!

1- go for cars of 1.0 or 1.1 litre as even the difference between them and 1.2 upwards is substantial and take out tpft cover. Also try for quotes on comprehensive with highest possible excess. For a car worth £1000 this means the cover is effectively tpft as nothing will be paid out for damage to the car
2- including mother and or father can mean a worthwhile reduction
3- insure the car in his name so that he can build up NCD of his own.Insuring in parents name when he is main user is likely to mean that any claims he makes are declined .pass plus is available from many driving schools.
4- investigate pass plus discounts of around 25% for taking 6 extra lessons covering night motorway and bad weather driving. It also sharpens up angles not covered by the normal test.
5- pass plus scheme available via tesco/churchill/direct line but you will need to phone them for prices as their websites do not mention pass plus. Also try dna insurance website which does feature pass plus via provident insurance.Your son car take out insurance before he passes his normal test and be allowed the discount once he takes the 6 pass plus lessons
Best of luck and if you need any more advice just shout.

Thanks both for your replies.
A friend suggested taking ins out in my name with him as second driver. I wasn't keen on this and had read somewhere on here that if a claim was made it could be invalidated by that arrangement.
I also agree that it's important for him to start building up his own no-claims for himself.
Hmmm... interesting to hear that a 1.2 will make a big difference over a 1.0/1.1.
He's still taking lessons at the mo, but thanks for mentioning 'pass plus'. So only a handful of insurers offer that?

Hi - full list is on their website and is about 10 companies all told.Young driver prices from Zurich or CIS Insurance even after PP discount are not very competitive.Norwich Union Direct might be worth a try.
