Cool

Just called Tescos for a quote. Currently with Greenlight - wanted £1052 to renew. Me only to drive (37) MY00 Full Scoobysport exhaust (Downpipe, mid & back box), E-Guard tracker, 10,000 miles p/a, Hemel address, garaged.

Tesco wants £621!!!!

A SAVING OF OVER £430

Did I take it - you bet I did!!

(Greenlight have now dropped their price to £780 - guess there's a lot of profit in this game!!)

After ringing around many specialist performance insurers such as Bell, Priviage, Admiral, High Performance, etc.. I found both AA and Direct Line up to £500 quid cheaper. (from quotes of £1,200-£1,400 down to £800). So Tescos insurance sounds in line with this trend. It seems as if the high performance "specialists" are taking the ****!

Be warned, if you have a UK spec try the high-street insurers, you may be suprised!

It seems obvious that an insurer who specialises in high risk will need to give a non-competitive quote as they will have a higher percentage of payouts to make across all of their customer base - why do they bother?

Tesco's were not as competetive as some when i rang them last month for my renewal, they were over 200 pounds more than my insurance co at the time, Direct line, but its all about shopping around and in the end Direct line were the cheapest and for my 1078 quid fully comp with protection, including PD7 alloys i dont think its that bad for a high risk area (im 32 with full no claims) now, with the PPP its an extra 115.50. Now thats not bad

Tescos & Direct Line are sister companies, both owned by the (Royal ?) Bank of Scotland, however unlike Direct Line and Privilege they are willing to undercut one another

Same with me - Tescos are quoting the same as Direct Line, but with £100 less excess - £50 cheaper for the same excess. Tescos will definitely be getting my business when I renew!

It would be good to know how Direct Line and Tesco's compare on any renewals. Has anyone been with Direct Line or Tesco for more than a year?

I've had to change insurers every year simply because the renewals have been way over the top.

It would appear that a lot of these big companies are trying to attract new business instead of concentrating on looking after their existing ones. I guess they have to cover their costs for all those very cheap new customer deals

When I phoned around back in Feb I had a lot of comments about D/L. Most of the brokers couldn't get below £1200, but D/L were £800 ?!?! Needless to say when I told them who were quoting such low figures they weren't too surprised; some even told me before I let on. Finally went with Adrian Flux for £750 for my RB5.

Stefan

P.S. Are Tesco still insisting on Tracker for Turbos?

Tesco's quoted me 200 quid more than direct line, who ive been with for quite a while so it just depends on how high risk your area is i think, tesco, even if it is a sister co wasnt as competetive as direct line.
But its swings and roundabouts in the insurance world as far as i can see, area, age and risk all come into it.

Me: 39 next birthday, 3 points on licence held since 1979 (SP50, 27/01/1999), claimed in January 2000, approx. £3,000 damage with no one else involved. MK7 postcode. The car is a 1999 Turbo with no engine mods.

Girlfriend: 34 next birthday, never had any points on licence held since Jan.'84. 1 claim 7 years ago.

Last year I went through Catterills. Phoned them and was quoted £800.00.for me and the girlfriend I immediately paid £400.00 on the card with the rest to follow with the completed proposal form. However I had trouble (lots of) getting confirmation of my no-claims-discount from my previous insurers, so I just sent back the proposal form. I then got a letter back from them stating that I had said I had 6 Yrs. n.c.b. during the phone call (Cr&p), and seeing as I filled in my proposal form with the correct 3 Yrs, they now wanted an extra £800.00 or they would cancel my insurance within 7 days.

I decided to pay it rather than get legal & messy, but they wont be getting my business in the future.

Today I phoned Tesco's for a quote although I've still got 6 weeks to run, I dont want to get into the same predicament as last year.

Tesco's quote for me was £1,060!!!! This may be a saving on last year but when I compare it to Spikey and seanG above I feel as if i'm being stitched up again.

In fact I'm so frustrated and pi55ed off that I'm prepared to offer anyone on here £100 cash if they can get me, or tell me where I can get insurance for under £700.00.

Shaun

"Tescos & Direct Line are sister companies, both owned by the (Royal ?) Bank of Scotland..."

err, don't think so. Tesco plc is .... well, its a plc ie owned by its shareholders. Direct Line is part of (R?)BOS.

However, there is a direct ( ) link between them ... I was looking for contents insurance recently and was looking at web quotes. The similarity between the questions asked and the user interface style was strikingly similar, but when the both quoted EXACTLY the same (£213.42 IIRC), I deduced that Tescos were probably acting as some sort of direct selling agent for Direct Line.

I got my quote of £680 from Tescos and then phoned Privilege (Direct Line) next and they quoted me over £700, so they are not giving the exact same quotes over the phone - at least not to me!.

Now my Tesco documents have arrived they look identical in style and format to the Direct Line and Privilege documents I have had in previous years.

I expect that the same 3rd party insurance company underwrites both companies policies but they use slightly different criteria and equations to arrive at a quote.

I just renewed today so I thought I'd pass on the details....

Age 30, MY99 turbo (LHD), Northampton, 7 years no claims, no points.

Existing policy through Churchill. Paid £584 last year, renewal was for £699.

Thought I'd ring Tesco after reading this thread but they wanted just over £1000 and required tracker to be fitted Worth a shot though.

I eventually went with Barclays who matched the renewal quote from Churchill, lowered the excess from £300 to £100 and included track day cover

Martin, that's just what I was told by the guy on the phone at Tescos, that was the reason they could offer me full no claims, a perk of a previous policy through Direct Line, following the Saxo free insurance offer. The documents are in exactly the same style, strangely the break down cover is different though, as Tescos use Greenflag for theirs.

Direct Line used to use Green Flag -- but now they've got their own breakdown service.

Shaun (Mully), That's coz your an old bugger and are more likely to fall a sleep at the wheel...and they know your brakes are shagged.

Try NFU and ask for Karen 01604 883736.

Paul, thanks for that. I dont think they're too concerned about me falling asleep at the wheel. More likely worried about me running into the back of other, slower, Scooby drivers. Like YOU Seeing as I'm having new pads AND Discs fitted on Saturday this is now unlikely to happen.

I suppose this very helpful lead means that you'll be claiming the £100 and knocking it off my bill

Shaun.

Be very very careful with Tescos Direct. They are not too clued up on modifications. My first quote on a import Supra TT with uprated IC, decat, blitz exhaust, BOV and alloys was £721. After checking around I decided to go with that quote and so asked Tescos to confirm the details. My details on their system only had the exhaust and alloys, nothing about an IC or decat. So I got them to requote, went up to £801. I then double checked the car details and they had it down as a Supra 3.0, no mention of the turbos. So I got them to requote and it went up to £1,500. I could have chanced my arm with the £801 quote, but fighting an insurance company when they have your details wrong is a bit tricky.

I eventually went with Lifesure 01480 474604, they knew what the car was and they understood what each mod did.

Tescos are underwritten by UK Insurance

UK Insurance was part of Green Flag, which is owned by RBS and operated as Direct Line Rescue, therefore Tescos insurance underwriters are RBS!

I've just moved house, I used the direct line website to get an idea of the price change through postcodes before buying the place. Judging by this it should have been around £300 cheaper for me in my new address, instead Tescos lumped another £115 onto my premium

Ah well only another 10 month until renewal time
