Lasy year's premium £374 (UK MY00, comprehensive, protected NCD, SDP and commuting only, 2 named drivers) - but yes, we're old

Renewal notice this morning £440 - 20% rise , but maybe not too bad overall in the current climate

Thinking of fitting SS BB, so phone them up. With the SS BB, sir, that'll be.....err, sorry sir, we can't give you cover at any price...

"...Its our policy - the BB will attract attention and make it more liable to theft and/or vandalism"

So phoned around...and got the same answer from 3 other companies as well!

Finally found two quotes
- £468 with up to £2500 of undisclosed mods ..but I'm sceptical of this one as the girlie on the phone sounded like she was at school yesterday and didn't even have a clue what a backbox actually was
- £501 (inc business use), by the company being flexible and classing it as an RB5 (grp 18b rather than 17b) which then allows me to mod it up to RB5 spec without having to tell them specific details

Bottom line is:
- if you fit a SS BB with a policy like we've currently got..if you tell them, you become uninsured,...if you don't tell them, you're uninsured, 'cos you've not disclosed a (very) material fact

Anyone been here before, and what did you do?
£61 to insure a SS BB strikes me as a bit much

PS could 17's and AP 6 pots be called 'RB5 spec'?
PPS I'll put the real company names in here when I'm sorted
PPPS (cryptic) TB ... of course its not on yet

Just to make you sick.....

...We don't charge extra for Back Boxes, Alloys, Brake upgrades etc...it only starts to cost when the ECU is changed or you carry out, lets say a Stage 1 engine conversion.

However the downside to this is I am not able to compete with those premium levels...

Now if you had a P1 or similar...then, yea I would be the man for the job *sigh*...sorry could assist on this occasion.

Tom

P.S. Have you tried NFU/Karen - 01604 883726...she may be able to help - presuming you are over 30????

All

Well, the second company quote (ie the one calling it an RB5) is actually NFU!..who have been very helpful and friendly on the phone. I think I'm gonna go with them on Monday.

I don't think I said that the effect of going from std UK MY00 (17b) to RB5 (18b) is £40 with them. So its initially an extra £40 for the BB, but then I can add wheels, brakes etc

Rum* - if you're around - I've read your other posts that say you can't do less than £800. So are we talking in the region of £800 for a standard P1 in the wife's name (44), me as additional driver (43 and three-quarters! - with co. car), full NCB, no claims/conviction in 5 years, SDP and business use, garaged, 'excellent' postcode . Or is it £900, £1000, £1100 ...

Would just like your gut feel, rather than a real quote - I haven't really thought about a P1 as I assumed the insurance would be far too high

TIA

BTW NFU didn't charge me anymore for adding a SS backbox, as the claimed 8 bhp increase is peanuts in a 220bhp car.

Added a full PPP to my MY98 and it has added £78 to the cost of mu insurance. I have already told them about the wheels, exhaust and color coded body kit the prodrive suspension. Premium total £833 approx.

Something I've wondered about on the odd occasion...

Lets say you own a bog-standard family saloon and the exhaust blows. You nip in to Kwik-fit (or wherever) and have a new one fitted.
This new exhaust won't necessarily be 100%identical to the original manufacturer's one.

So, are you supposed to inform your insurance company?

If not, do they have to know about changing the backbox on the Scooby? It could just be that your original was shot and you've replaced it with whatever you could get your hands on?

Any thoughts?

(for the record, I've got an SSBb anf my insurer is fully aware!)

I have my cover with privilige, and they were happy to cover the SS backbox on a like for like replacement basis. There was no increase in premium ...

Andrew.

Paul/Greg

..having just gone with NFU, maybe I want my £40 back as well

Fancy a class action, anyone, about why we get different deals from the same company?

For everyone else watching...

...we've found out that NFU's (newish?) policy, to everyone, is to raise the ins. group of a modified (but I don't know how much modified) UK Scoob from 17b to 18b.

An RB5 is group 18b, so I expect you can mod your std scoob up to that sort of level. I guess that even more mods would then take you to 19b etc etc, but we didn't ask NFU that. Doh.

Greenlight didnt charge extra for my HKS Hiper, and I think that attracts more attention than a Scoobysport

Brembo brake kit upped the price by 80 quid, due to the policy being a like for like replacement jobbie.

James.

StanS

Excuse me asking, but are you very very old

I thought we were a good insurance risk , but £434 for 19b is mighty cheap...or do you mean your car is 3 parts short of a 22B!!

..and by the way peeps, having just gone with NFU, I asked them what the quote would be for a P1 - answer...£540!!!!!!

Rum, I'm 23 and have 4 years NCB do you think you could beat Direct lines qoute of £1100 for a UK spec turbo? Just a rough idea will do, I don't mind ringing for a proper qoute.

Cheers Bob

Bob, try Adrian Flux, I insured my MY98 through them - £650 unmodified, fully comp, 4 years NCB... customer service is hard to get through to though!

For a load of insurance quotes I got for my previous car (grp 19 Fiat Coupe 20v turbo) check out

Our insurance company Hastings want £60 extra for the Scoobysport rear box mod, nothing extra for brake upgrades, and to increase the excess from £250 to £500 if we fitt 17" OZ wheels or similar. Wonder how many of us don't let insurers know about wheel upgrades. Our renewal is £580, 36yr old 7+ protected NCB, Essex probably on the pricey side, Flux wanted £590 without any mods.

Simon, I've tried Flux's but they said they couldn't qoute on the details given. I think this might be connected to using the local plods reg. no. as I haven't actually bought a scooby yet! Bob
