Default Urgent help describing PPP to Insurance Companies

No - this is not in the wrong thread !

I bought a six month old STi with PPP on Saturday and I'm now trying to insure the bloddy thing.

I've just been trying to explain PPP to an Insurance Company (Privilege) and he wants to know EXACTLY what has been upgraded to the car (i.e. is it just engine management or is exhaust/dump valve or anything else upgraded for performance purposes ? In terms that both he and I can understand what do I need to tell him please ?

Hi Mate,

AFAIR, the PPP on the STI is firstly upping the power o/p from 265 to 305, with the following details:-

ECU swapped for re-mapped version releasing more power, downpipe replaced changing it for one with a high flow cat, also back box changed. Fuel pump is also swapped for an increased flow.

Hope this helps

Dave

Thanks Fox - I've just got a quote from Subaru Insured for £950 (me 38 and full protected NCB). He was also extremely helpful and said all I need to tell other companies is that PPP is a Manufactured Approved 15% performance upgrade covered under warranty. If I start describing all the individual changes it will confuse the hell out of them.

I'd still be interested in how other people have got on in describing PPP.

I just told them it had the PPP fitted, and they seemed to know all about it.
Saying that I did give them the ABI code that relates to teh car with the PPP fitted.........

That ABI Code might be a big help !!!

I've just had a quote from Privilege £200 dearer than Subaru Insured.

Looking at other comments on the Insurance threads I wonder whether some of those that have cheap quotes are properly insured.

A-Plan seem to understand exactly what PPP is - they have also undercut Subaru Insured - though I need to go back and check the excesses with SI. I'm going to phone one more specialist but I think I;m done

I'm not so sure about A-Plan now. They told me that if I took the policy they would put Exhaust Upgrade as a mod on the policy which I would have to amend and return quoting Manufacturer Approved Pro-Drive Performance Pack. My guess is this would go back to the underwriter who would either a) invalidate the policy b) revise the quote.

They quoted me £899 with £500 excess. Subaru Insurance quoted me £952. Methinks the extra £53 (less than two gallons of Optimax a month would be money well spent.

Moderators - Please feel free to move to Insurance thread now - it served its purpose in this one - and thanks all !!!!

Update on my situation - I have spoken again to A-Plan (Darren 01635 874646) and I am satisfied that they fully understand what PPP is and they will confirm this in a letter to me with cover note if I take the policy.

I'm now waiting on a quote from Performance Direct 0870 420 3896 - they seem to think they can do it cheaper and he definitely understands what PPP is but he's going to speak to his underwriter to double check.

My take on the whole PPP situation after a couple of frantic days is that there is still a lot of confusion out there. For instance - do not mix Sti Prodrive with PPP (Prodrive Performance Pack).

Make sure your insurer (or broker) know EXACTLY what car + mod you are trying to get cover for.

One final update from me - Darren at Performance Direct undercut the market completely - quoted me £850 with a £500 excess and confirmed in no uncertain terms that he understood PPP - confirmed it anyway with the underwriter and my cover note/policy will include the words Prodrive Performance Pack - 15% Engine Performance Upgrade.

The deal is now done !

EBRWRX,
It looks as though you are sorted now, but have a read of the letters I have posted up here. They are almost 12 months old, but the situation doesn't appear to have eased any.

http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/showthread.php?t=415302

It has always been a problem, and I suspect it will continue to be that way, with 'most' of the bigger named insurance companies, that seem to shy away from PPP'd cars, or quote alarmingly high prices, sometimes.
Yet another poster will manage to get a realistic quote with apparently correct insurance cover with one of the more difficult companies.

Cheers
