DO NOT USE SABRE INSURANCE!!!!!!!!!!!
mate got insured with them for 1500, they rang him up 1 week later and said the car was a grey import so insurance had doubled to £3000.
he told them he wasn't to know and he couldn't afford new premium so wants to cancel it, they said ok fine you have to pay 30% so he said yes thats fine £500 yeah? they said no your premium is £3000 so you owe us £1000 and all he has is 1 months insurance to show for it

Let's be honest though, he was trying it on with them, and if he had had an accident he would not have been insured...

Contest it to the hilt. Hard to enforce such a premium for what appears to be a "honest" mistake. Does he pay monthly?
Agree with WR1 though. Surely he knew exactly what he was insuring.
Good luck. Insurance companies make enough without having £1000.00 dropped in their lap for something thats no more than an administration charge.

A little look atthe GISC rules is useful as Sabre will be a member no doubt, would certainly assist if the agent or broker involved was a member.
Remeber Sabre are owned by AVIVA or Norwich Union to most of us.
Your mate should have been told the short term cancellation rates at inception, if an insurer / broker does not provide you with full details of the quote when you take it out you have 14 days cooling off period from the date you are given the full information. Beware of the brokers Terms Of Business - mine allow me to keep the years commision in the event of cancellation.
Personally I believe the contract is not valid as there was no 'conses ad iem' (something like that latin no good) meaning no meeting of minds. In otherwards the car for which the insurer agreed cover for was not the same as the actual vehicle.
Provided this is innocent misrepresentation IMO the insurer could be persuaded to reconsider the position, particualrly if they confirm they would not have imdenified him in the event of a claim and I mean his own damage not the third party which they would have to pay under the road traffic act.
Based on the fact no claims made I would be looking to NTU (not taken up) that policy.
recently had a situation like this one mention of GISC to the broker and the lady had her policy the next day previoulsy taking 12 calls and 2 weeks. Just you wait till FSA comes in Jan 15th 2005 clients will have more rights than an asylum seeker has to benefits.
