do you wait until insurance renewal time to inform them or is it best to tell insurers straight away ?

You can wait until renewal, most insurers do rate on an Sp30 these days but should not make much difference.

Tell them now, any insurer worth their salt won't increase it until renewal.

Duty of disclosure on a motor policy means things like this do not have to be notified until renewal. Could if you wanted to though, they won't increase the premium.
