Total Loss Gap Protection Rip Off

Some advise needed:
Bought a CTR with the said protection from R*lands Honda end of March 2003. Paid £400 for a 3 years cover (called Rycare Cover run by another company)
Sold the car end of July 2003 and the Honda dealer said I am stuffed, no refund in premium allowed. And I said this was not explained when I bought the car but tough luck I was told.
That's £100 per month of ownership.
Anyone have experience with this or any pointers to help recover some costs?
