I have been driving for 8 years, then went and lost my 3 years ncb because of some scum bag who broke in to my car. Now i am trying to get insurance for a 1995 wrx estate import!!!

Was repair bill high?
If you cannot find a company that will cover you for reasonable money it may be worth paying off the repair bill to your previous ins'co and keep your 3yrs NCB (or will it be 4yrs then?)
On the other hand, bills for repairs done through insurance are usually silly high because ins'cos have their own "approved" repairers and literally pay themselves for repairs, inflating "repair costs" sky high. Latest example is a wee scratch from a car park worth a grand, luckily it didn't happen to me.
