Thumbs up

I have the standard head unit with 6 CD changer in the boot. The speakers have made a massive difference but what to do next??

Do I
1- Keep original kit and buy a decent amp
or
2- spend a fortune on new head unit, CD changer and then eventually get an amp as well.

Help me decide please.

Thanks

My old Kenwood head unit packed up a couple of months ago, so I stuck the factory unit back in as a stop gap - with the Infinity 605s in the front, standard rear. It sounded sh*te! Just fitted Kenwood 9521 (?) - the MP3 unit with 4.5V line outs - together with a MacAudio 6000 amp (4 x 60W rms) driving the 605s. The sound is just sooo much better. I'm gonna get an Auto Acoustics stealth sub box to run off the spare pair of amp channels, once the piggy bank has recovered - head unit was £364 from www.locostcaraudio.co.uk and the amp was £120 from my local car hifi shop (special offer - Maplin charge £180 for it!).

So, in order, I'd replace head unit first (I've got 12 albums on one CDR using MP3, so the multichanger can always wait), then fit an amp.

Thanks - looks like I had better go look in the 4sale section!

Yorkmeister, The standard head unit does not have pre-outs (presuming it is a philips unit) so you would need to get line converters to run an amp. These line converters have a nasty habit of inducing hiss in the system.
You could always put your standard head unit in the for sale section, that might ease the outlay of a new set up.
Buy lax power and trawl through the back of that you might find a bargain or two in there.
