However, when I replaced my head unit I just plugged in that connector and that was all. It's still working a month later so I think I'm safe

I have just installed a Clarion head unit and had the same prob. I left it off and have had no probs so far. The only thing I had to do was cut in to the loom to connect the 'remote' wire to the amp in the boot so the Amp doesn't come on when you turn the ignition, it only comes on when you switch the stereo on.
