Question

6 1/2" component speakers, sensitivity 92dB so OK to run straight from headunit, 54mm mounting depth should be easy to fit, £75 delivered...sounds like the sort of thing I'm after for front upgrade. But would they be any good? Why are people often Kenwood bashing? Any other sensibly priced components I should know about? Infinity Reference 605cs/JBL GT 6.c seem to be highly praised but £100 feels a bit much considering no amp etc - not sure I really need top of the range stuff.

Interested in your opinions

Cheers
John

Infinity 605CS are only £93 IIRC. In different league, but need twice the power of the kenwoods for the same volume. I have kenwoods similar to the ones you mention in another car and they are ok, but only that. Reasonable budget choice for sensitivity/ease of fitting, but don't expect them to be audiophile. Kenwood headunits and amps fare much better IMHO, with the exception of £120 Kenwood PS70P components which have genuine 92dB/W/m sensitivity, sound good and go straight in a Scoob. For use off a headunit I would recommend them over anything else I've heard - which includes several Infinity, Kenwood, Pioneer, Sony, but not much really posh stuff.

I thought the psr70p would be the ones to go for, but cheapest I have found was £133. Sadly there is a long waiting list for purchases of this price and whilst speakers are highish on the 'wants' list they don't feature on the 'needs' list. Just wondered if someone would say the p703's were not too bad for half the price. "OK, but only that" probably means I'll wait to get the psr70p's in a coup0le of months.

John, would like to know if the £120 was an actual price you've seen somewhere?

It would just be a shame to recommend them when the 605CS are only £18 more and a different world for quality... however, the volume problem could be irritating and if you don't want an amp then it's a bit tricky to recommend them IMHO. If I was going to upgrade just the speakers and do no more, then I would consider them certainly. £120 was about a year ago - Advanced Audio Solutions who I got my kit off - give them a ring and check their current price - they didn't have a website last time I checked 01252 654360/403551
