Rear door speakers
I have just got a pair of 5 1/4 in replacement speakers for the rear doors, but have a small problem mounting them. The original speakers have 3 mounting holes like in the front doors. However, the new speakers have 4, and of course they will therefore not line up.
Do I need to use MDF to mount the rear speakers as I did with the new fronts, or is there an easier method anyone has used. I am worried in using MDF that the speakers will foul the door cards.
Any incite appreciated

I thought the rear door speakers were only 4" so you would have to either cut the hole bigger and drill extra holes to line up with the new speaker or you would have to make an MDF spacer (which would be the easier option) If you use 12mm MDF there wont be an issue with the door card.A better bet would have been to forget about the rear speakers altogether and get a decent component set up front with a suitable amp
Good luck

I originally bought 4 in speakers after reading this forum, and found them too small ! They are definitely 5 1/4 in. I think there are posts on the forum suggesting both sizes.
The reason I want them is I have kids who regularly sit in the back seats.
So using 12mm MDF would not foul the door card ?

What year of car is it.I'm basing my knowledge on the newage cars as i have never fitted aftermarket speakers to a classic. On my 2005 car 12mm MDF will fit fine behind the rear door card without fouling although i must stress that i didnt bother going down this route as i prefered the 'up front' setup. The rear door speaker size on my car is only 4" which is why i queried it

I've got MB Quart 5 1/4" components in the back doors of my 05 UK STI. They were fitted by a professional so sorry I don't know what he used. I'm guessing you will need spacers though. Mine don't foul on the windows or the door cards, which are fitted with dynamat.
I totally disagree with folks saying don't bother with the rear speakers. In my opinion decent components all round, driven by a decent amp fills the car with a quality rich sound. Some say I don't sit in the back so I wouldn't hear the benefit, to me thats like having a 5.1 home surround sound system and saying I don't sit in that corner of the room so I haven't bothered wiring up those corner speakers.
