In what way is it too big???
I removed the standard double din and replaced it with a single din Pioneer with Forester pocket and have just replaced this with a Pioneer AVIC-D3 double din unit and both have fitted perfectly!
Can I just double check that you have used the subaru fitting cage (the one that was blted to the original head unit) and that you have left off any "trim ring" that you would normally clip on around the head unit - due to the integrated style of the h/u in the facia panel this is not needed.

Does your new radio have a plastic trim around it. Most do and are removable for Double Dins which sit behind the dash fascia. My new Kenwood DD had this and would not fit without removing it. Most DD's are just under 10" IIRCorrectly so if the body of your new player is this size I suggest it will fit.

it does have a trim but i have removed that and there is still no chance of it fitting the only option i can think of is trying to file the car trim out a bit more so the head unit will fit in it

it fits the harness fine but the facia is exactly the same size where as the kenwood standard unit is smaller when it gets to the facia.
iam tempted just to stick it back on ebay!

my mate had a newage a few years back had that problem....used an old trick i used to use when i played ice hockey, and wanted to practice in the alley outside, u used to be able to buy the hockey sticks with the plastic blades (at the bottom) from jjb etc but they came STRAIGHT, and obviously hockey blades have to be bent, so when ever i replaced a blade id soak it in a bucket of warm water and then bend it in a vice, to make a curve,...
now obviously im not telling u to soak ur dash in warm water, however how we done it was we put plastic bags at the bottom incase water leaked, and then put an old jumper in aswell, and just got a really strong rag (one that doesnt drop water when u squeeze it) and stuck the heating on full blast (hot) and jus rubbed around the trim with the hot water on the rag (lil bit of persil may help) for bout half an hour to make the plastic soft, then just stuck a clamp both ways and open the clamps, left them fixed for ten minutes and released, wipe down and we made the console that much bigger to fit the radio in snugly, we jus took our time. sounds silly mixing water with a car but if u do it causiously ull be alright. alternatively, get aluminium oxide sandpaper (its normally yellow) and carefully sand down the edges of the trim, rather than filing it. have u seen how much clearance there is between radio and console? i mean where abouts it exactly starts to wedge, jus sand that bit down. chinese ones on ebay dont really fit subarus very well, i bought a single din touch screen one off ebay, chinese and was a pain even to fit single, so just went out n bought a pioneer one, goes straight in!
to be honest mate, id sell that double din and get a single din tv, they look so much smarter even more if u put one of these in underneath:
