I've bought the Kenwood KFC-WDA69RC 6x9 subs, that a few others on here have fitted (Car Audio Direct - The UK's leading car audio and stereo resource. Kenwood KFC-WDA69RC - Kenwood KEN-KFCWDA69RC)

I'm wanting to mount them under the rear shelf, and I was wondering if these 6x9 MDF rings would be suitable:

They're available in 12 or 18mm - any idea which would work best?

I doubt that there's enough meat on them to enable you to use existing holes in the shelf. No problem if you are happy to drill the metal but when I did the same I was keen to use holes that were already there.
I'd go for the 18mm. The magnets do protrude into the boot somewhat (I have to be careful when loading with kiddie paraphernalia) but an extra 6mm shouldn't make too much difference.

 

Thanks Simon. I'd seen those pics of your when researching the Kenwood subs. What do you think is the disadvantage with the 12mm? I can see that protruding an extra 6mm into the boot isn't worth worrying about, but I'm not sure of the effect of taking the speakers another 6mm from the shelf (as the holes in the shelf aren't 6x9, so there could be sound reflections).

 

Are these speakers any good. How good is the bass.

 

Do a search on here, a few people have got them, and are happy. They're not going to be a match for a big sub in the boot, but if you're after music quality (as opposed to monster bass) you don't need a 10" sub. On car audio specific forums, many don't like to go for 6x9s, instead preferring big bass, but if you look at serious home hi fi speakers, the don't have that much bass (although I guess they're not trying to deliver bass over a scooby exhaust

I am not sure if I would know whether sound reflections were an issue. They sound good to me and give as much bass as I want in the car. With my old Alpine HU the fronts struggled a little to keep up but I recently fitted one of the new Fast Ipod units with slightly more power and the system feels better balanced now (the sound quality from the Ipod doesn't help though!).

It's all rather personal but I won't be going any further as the limitation of the Impreza bodyshell, deep exhaust note and poor speaker location mean that the curve of diminishing returns on these cars is VERY steep.
