having big problems fitting 16cm mb quart in the front door of my my98. the spacer plate supplied is no good, it fouls the door trim by about 1cm and their is no way the trim will go back on. any ideas ? (is their an aftermarket spacer i can buy, or should i just forget it and buy 13cm speakers and use the original spacer ? )

Hiya slim - up late! I'm assuming that you've got the same door panels as below (ie you've got the "newer interior")



If so, they'll fit with a bit of effort.

What I did was use the existing "pods" and a 12mm MDF spacer ring. You may need to remove a bit of the plastic from the pod in places to make the driver (speaker) actually fit.

You need the spacer for two reasons: to clear the window at the back, and to stop you from having to completely hack the pod to bits.

The MB Quarts may have come with a mounting template? If so, use this to make the ring.

This should hopefully be fairly straightforward. Let us know how you get on.

 

thanks chiark , yes my door is similar.once i have made the 12mm spacer where does it go ? between the back of the speaker and the original pod i presume (sorry for being ignorant !!!). also, i have a genesis amp, a kenwood amp (both about 35cm by 20cm by 7cm ) and a 10 disk changer, any ideas where to mount them ? (i have prodrive electric recaro's, not much space underneath )

 

Yep, you're right. Spacer ring goes between the back of the speaker and the original pod.

For mounting, your only viable option is the boot. I've gone for this approach:


Some have mounted the CD-changer on a piece of MDF in the spare wheel well, others have hung it under the parcel shelf.

For amp, you could simply mount it on the back of the seats and carefully run the cables so that everything is 100% safe, or you could again maybe use the spare wheel well. Amps are normally designed to run either horizontally or vertically, but NOT upside down as the heat will go back into the circuit board - mounting upside down may shorten the life of the amp...

If you're going to add a sub, you could always mount the amp on the back seats temporarily then plan on making a box and amp rack in the future. In that case, don't cut your cables too short!

thanks yet again chiark , i will get stuck in this weekend (though i am not looking forward to it !! ) at the moment i am driving around with half my trim missing and this is not a good idea with a fully de-catted ss exhaust. one last question - yes i am putting subs in (jl audio of course). on your own install did you custom make the sub(s) box or did you just put in a standard box or two and then fit a piece of mdf flush with the boot so that it looks as if it is custom made ? ps it looks damn good !

why did I write veritas when I met petras.

Veritas make some 8 inch mids which retail for around 1000. They have a coaxial horn loaded compression driver in them which crosses over at 500Hz.

Scott has them in his car, Oh my god!

I still like the JLs, but could be persuaded to change to a single 12...

...may go and see Khalid. However, we're moving house at the moment so cash is non-existent!

where did you get the internal sizes (volume cm3 ) from ? as i have made a few boxes before and i am going to give it a go .

It's a custom made box that I laboured over.. Basically, it's a wedge shape with three chambers - two for subs and one for the amp and gubbins. I made it from 12mm mdf with fiberglass to keep the weight down...

...though the amount of fiberglass in there probably weighs more than the extra wood would have done!

Will let you know if I upgrade, but as I'm moving house at the moment, I doubt it will be soon!
