Just fitted a new Sony 4 X 50 watt CD Head unit installed, no amp, great unit but way to powerful for the standard speakers.

Car in Question 4 door 93 WRX, none split/folding rear seats.
Does anyone know the largest speakers that will fit in the standard holes in the front doors??

Next, the rear shelf, what are the largest speakers that fit in the standard holes, or is it possible to enlarge the holes ??

Who recommends what make of speakers, the car HiFi shop say Pioneer are very good at the moment.

Finally [hooray you say] should I go 2 or 3 way speakers ??

Not sure what size will fit , but do consider Infinity's Kappa range of speakers , I've had a 5" component kit (mids & tweeters) in my 93 Orion for over a year now and still sound great , in the package you get mids(obviously), tweeters (obviously) and passive crossovers and great value for what you are getting .

I do pose a question here myself ,

Q. Will my 5x7 Infinity Kappas fit in the rear shelf of my 93 WRX (hope so) only , I've had a little look , and I think it's just a case of cutting the parcel shelf up a bit.

I've just bought a 97 4 door scooby and in the rear shelf it had a pair of 6x9 pioneer speakers, which i have now replaced with philips 6x9 3 way GM6935 240w speakers, and they sound brill, plenty of bass.
The holes that were there looked as though they had been cut in the shelf cloth but looks to be plenty of room in the metal shelf underneath.

If your looking at changing your front
speakers then most people recommend getting the Infinity 605cs Components, consisting of mid's, tweeters and crossovers about £90.
And they should! fit perfectly into the original speaker locations without any modifications.
Changing the rear speakers for 6x9's can be abit of a headache as some modifications need to be done.

 

16cm will go in all round, but 16.5s will go in the front doors WITH MDF spacers..... piece of cake to make/buy from most car audio centres.

I'm afraid that I can't say with absolute certainty as the MY94 does have a different interior and, possibly, smaller speakers.

I believe that 5" are the standard, though could be horribly wrong, and that larger speakers will fit with a bit of persuasion and a collar as Dan says.

When you whip the old ones out, could you measure them and let me know? Failing that, a search may reveal the answer but I'd rather go from absolutely correct information.
