Hard to believe... maybe the original speaker is easier for the head to drive so will be getting more power? Try moving the balance from left to right.
An Alpine should have enough power to drive them, but an amp would give more control over the woofer cone at higher volumes.
As for the sub? That's a question of personal preference and music style I guess... decide once the other speaker is fitted.
