I bought a Kenwood 7090R head unit about 3 months ago, brand new for £150. I fitted the unit without any problems but its sounds terrible.Thinking it was the speakers I went to my local Halfords to look at some. While I was there I got one of the assistants to have a listen to it. It’s your head unit he says, it’s got too much power for your standard speakers.
I though better than doing it myself and took it to a specialist who fitted me some new front and rear speakers for £170. Pioneers in the back and front, good ones i think.

On my way back from the place I cranked it up to about No 10 on the unit, to my horror it sounded the same as before, serious distortion at very low volume.

I took it straight back and complained. It’s your head unit they told me. So i took the head unit back where I got it from. After about 3 weeks I went to get it back, they fitted it for my while I waited and it sounded ok when I left. About 15 mins into my journey home I turned the volume up to No 15. Surprise surprise it’s exactly the same as it was before.
The problem I have got now is convincing them there is a problem with the unit. It’s obviously an intermittent fault and they probably didn’t see it when they tested it.

Has anyone else had similar experience with this unit or have any suggestions?

Thanks

Chris

Wiring, oh dear.

Dont you think it could be the unit itself, i am no expert but is it not possible for it to have left the factory faulty?

The reason i say this is, the original equipment sounded much better than the upgraded kit. The only thing I have done is added one of those wiring harnesses so i could plug the new unit straight in. I know i am clutching at straws, but could it be the wrong harness?

When i put the original unit back in it (Panasonic i think) it sounds pretty good but it has a crap or knackered radio receiver which doesnt hold a good signal.

Thanks

Chris

Hmm, what model year Scooby do you have? The wiring harness should be right if you've got sounds coming out of it at all, so it's probably safe to discount that one.

Sounds to me like head unit is most likely, as you say. Erm. You've pretty much eliminated everything else.
