Default Forester OEM Head Unit

Anyone know what the oem headunit is in the MY06 Forester 2.5XT ?

It was a Kenwood unit in my WRX which could drive my Kenwood Keg nicely -this one however has a square connector for an external CD changer so no good unless anyone knows of an adaptor ?

Thanks
Pete

User banned for extreme lack of taste. Also banned from breeding - please hand gonads to your local health authority. Thank you.

More seriously, that suggests that Subaru have changed suppliers. Please update us when you do find out what it is!

Can you take a photo of this connector as someone might recognise it and be able to help

Almost certain now that this is a clarion unit..don't believe it has changed for the 06 forester so must have been the same for the 05 at least..
I'll know for certain in the next week or so when I try to hook it up to an ipod using the clarion ipod adaptor

Hi Bartop,

Just took delivery of my new 2.5XT after having 2 Scobbies. Very pleased with it, but can't wait for the 1000 mile service and the fitting of the Prodrive pack.

I am also going down the stereo modding line and have been wondering what the original unit is.
I also want to hook up my iPOD, but want to keep the original head unit so as to maintain the steering controls.
Asked my local dealer what make it was and they didn't have a clue - "Oh, it is made by Subaru". Me thinks not somehow!!!!
I assumed it was a Kenwood as that was in my STi and they are similar looking.

Have you got the definitive answer yet??

Are you changing your speakers as well?
If so, do you know what size they are and what make are you going for?
Are they 17cm (front) and 13cm (rear).
Just as with the Scooby I assume that there is a fairly limited range of speakers that will fit due to the shallow depth of the door.

I have also been recommended to run the headunit into something called a "CleanSweep" and from this into a 4 channel amp. And then into the 4 speakers or the front speakers + a sub

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Simon

Right - had the head unit out today and it's bad news I'm afraid...

I was sure it was going to be a Clarion as I've seen a picture of the back of a MY05 FSTi model and it was definately a clarion and had the Cnet connection to be able to link it up to a Clarion EA1251 to hook up to my Ipod.

Unfortunately it's completely different - some pics below. It's definately a Kenwood but worse still it doesn't even have the round connector that the model on My 05 wrx had to enable it to connect up to my Kenwood Keg

Anyone know what the big black connectior is for ?

Back to square one - looks like I need to bite the bullet and upgrade the head unit which I was going to do but not yet....the Kenwood DDX 7025 and newer models look very appealing though

Haven't started down the speaker route yet though the quality is miles better than in the WRX...

That connector looks the same as the one on the back of the unit in my old 2004 Legacy, which was also a Kenwood unit. I had the Subaru dealer add the 10 CD changer before delivery.
When I chopped it for a 2005 STi I had them take out the CD changer.
I hoped to connect it to the unit in the STi. There was a convertor box between the head unit and the Kenwood CD changer. Thus the 20 pin rectangular connector was mapped to a 13 pin round connector.

Ooh - sounds interesting

Don't suppose you still have the convertor or know where I could get one ?

Many thanks - that is really helpful.
Although not the answer I was looking for either. I was hoping it had a round 13 pin CD changer connection so that a Dension Link Plus could have been used http://www.dension.com/icelink_info.htm

Alternatives now include:
Dension fm-link http://www.dension.com/icelink_fm.htm
Kenwood iP500 http://www.cel-direct.com/shop1.asp?s_page=mp31.asp, although need to check if this will connect to the headunit
JL Cleansweep into which the iPOD can be plugged directly http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_c...php?page_id=79. This has the big advantage that it also sorts out the sound quality from the headunit, however it is an expensive option and doesn't allow you to control the iPOD from the headunit / steering controls or charge it up
Doesn't look like there will be a perfect solution

Do you know if changing your headunit will still allow the use of the steering controls?

If you start thinking about speaker changes then they are 6.5" (16.5cm) front and 5.25" (13cm) rear.

Looks like I need to have a little chat to my local dealer about the PPP!!! They have already had the money off me when I bought the car and have said that it would be fitted at the first (1000 mile) service in December!!!
A quick ring to Prodrive first might be warrented.

Please keep in touch and let me know what your thoughts are about connecting an iPOD.

Best wishes

Simon
