Default Questions about Ru's 9812 Install...

(Posted here from private messages...)

I see you have done a great job with your Alpine.

Just a couple of questions if you have time.

Would like to do the same, and wondered why you chose that model of Alpine?

Do you really need to run a seperate live?

Which loom adapter did you use?

Any tips on where to get the Alpine and wire adapter?

Are you happy with it?

Many thanks indeed,

Cheers,

GE90

Hi GE90

Cheers!

I got the kit from

http://www.incarelectrics.co.uk/

Although it was actually via another site

http://www.audio66.com/

Weird or what; I'd go straight to the first one I listed if I did it again. Their payment was also through another site.

Their prices were the best I could find, however I did have to wait while they got the gear from Alpine. They kept me up to date though.

I chose the 9812RB as

a) it was high power (4 x 60W); I don't really want to amp up the whole car.
b) it was silver, so it would match the dash.
c) it had decent DSP facilities so I could set up time-alignment.

I'm really happy with it, it sounds excellent (although I'm still tweaking the settings).

The iPod interface is a bit clunky to use (scrolling through tracks when searching, maximum number of tracks in a search is around 500 after which they are numbered not named), but this is pretty much sorted by creating playlists. It is also, I believe, a limitation of the iPod and not Alpine's fault.

The separate 12V feed is necessary, and the head unit deserves it! If you're fitting something half decent it's worth a bit of time getting it reasonable.

The subaru head unit DIN adaptor was bought from the same site as the head unit. I'm sure they're all pretty much the same (although mine had one problem - one of the plug 'contacts' was loose so it came out when I plugged it all up; I had to bend out its locking tab slightly and push it back in the housing before it was sorted).

It is often worth asking these sort of questions in the forum itself, as others can then use the info - I have no problems 'doing it in public' (oo-er ) if you don't.

Cheers,

Much appreciated. Decided to go ahead with it, just unsure about running the live.....!

What amp in-line fuse did you use?

Cheers again,

Please feel free to 'make public'!

Thanks!

----------------------------------------------------------------

I bought an amplifier installation kit from Maplins (around £15) as I was too lazy to get separate bits. This had a long power lead with integral fuse holder and includes fuses. I chose 20Amp as this was what the head unit had on its power lead.

The kit was a Shark Audio NB52G.

I now have lots of spare wire, and some long phono leads. This may help when I go for a sub in the boot (must resist....).

I also bought some 30Amp choc block terminal things from a local DIY store to join the fat wire from the battery to the thin wire on the head unit. The fat wire was far too thick for an easy crimped connection.

Excellent, thanks again.

I will let you know how it goes!

Look forward to hearing about it.

Hi Buzz

I remember hearing yours at the East Sussex Scoobies meet a while back, but I'd forgotten what model it was!

re the fuse - that's the problem with 'temporary' installs; they often last much longer than they are intended! Still, if it aint broke, don't fix it!
