Default few ice questions ??

Help !!

okay here goes !! been wantting to update the standard car stereo in my car for a while now so over the last 6 months have been gathering a few upgrades for my ice systmn, nothing fitted as yet as was wantting to waitt until I had gathered everything togther first.

so okay the gear I have now purchased consists off the following :

JBL-GT4 10 inch 1000 watt max sub

mdf sub box

Alpine SPR-136A components

Alpine MRVf407 4/3/2 channel amp

questions as follows ??!!

front component speakers come with tweeters and also crossovers, never having used this type off speaker before can someone explain just what the purpose off these two items do ?? and just what wires go to what exactly ??!! the two small tweeters have two short gold wires from them and the two crossovers have a total off six gold plated terminalls on each one.

amp, has an advertised spec off : 150 watt per channel into 4 ohms , 300 watt per channel into 2 ohms, 600 watt bridged into 4 ohms. want to run the front components and 10 " rear sub from this single amp all okay ?? have know idea about exactly what speaker wire goes to exactly what terminal on the actual amp but did receive a very informative instruction book with the amp so should be okay there but maywell be back for further help when times comes to fit it all within the car !!

lastly anyone run these particular alpine type r componets or JBLGT4 10" sub give me an idea on just what likely results I am going to achive with this combination off gear ?? not looking for particularly award winning type audio !! just something a bit above average without having spent too much dosh in the process !!!

lastly !!! wiring ?? still to purchase all the associatted wiring required to run this amp, sub and front componets anyone advise me just exactly what will be required in terms off wiring connectors , fuses etc required ??

thats it !! any advice suggestions would certainly be much appreciatted as mentioned a total beginner so please do go easy on me !! will get there in the end am sure just need to take each step at a time !!

cheers guys,
john

The crossover effectively separates the high range (tweeters) from the low and mid range frequencies (which go to the bigger speakers in your kit).

The 6 terminals will comprise:
2 x input (negative and positive - these are the wires which currently go to your existing speakers)
2 x tweeters (neg and pos - run these to your tweeters)
2 x mid (neg and pos -run these to your midranges - the bigger ones!)

Not sure what Impreza you have - but if it's a current shape one - you can mount the cross over in the door panel just behind where the map pocket is.

As far as the components are concerned see the answer above.

As to whether to run all this off that amp, yup thats fine.

The amp will consist of 'Front right and left' and 'rear right and left'. Wire the components to the front channels of the amp (common sense really right + to right +, right - to right -, etc.) The rear channels on the amp should have the option to run 'mono' which means the sub is wired to the positive of one side and the negative of the other, so making the two rear channels into one. Sounds strange but it works. Not familiar with your amp but it is standard practice to have it marked on the amp (normally a line drawn linking the 'mono' + and -) if unsure ref your instructions.

As for wiring you can buy 'wiring kits' from any car hi-fi shop, Halfrauds, etc. These will have virtually everything you need including fuses. The power cable with inline fuse needs to have the fuse as close to the battery as possible. Earth cable from amp earth to a good chassis earth. Remote cable goes from the 'rem' or 'switch' on the amp to the 'rem', 'acc' or 'power aerial' on the back of the stereo. The sub box should have all the connectors it need in it already.

If you haven't already got some treat yourself to some crimpers, a pair that are plenty good enough for the job can be had for a tenner (but avoid the £2 specials, they'll twist out of shape). If the cable kit you get doesn't come with crimp connectors get some (pennies each) for all connections.

Make sure all the cable used is good enough for the job. Avoid the cheapo wire that comes free with your speakers, your amp could easily fry it which you really don't want.

You're only other issue is RCA (Phono) cables. If your stereo has Front and Rear (or Sub specific) outputs then get 2 sets of RCA's and run them from stereo to amp (self-explanatory as all colour coded). If the stereo only has one pair of outputs then you will need a set of splitters which you can use to split the one RCA cable at the amp end.

If any of that doesn't make sense or you want further help just PM me and i'll talk you through it.

Tony.
