Can you post your musical tastes, current kit and budget?

 

Hi,
Out of the various configurations of ported, sealed and bandpass bass boxes and free air speakers all of various sizes and numbers of speakers 2x6" to 4x12" and beyond , which of these gives punchy bass and not all the headache inducing rumbles that some people love?

Am I right in thinking a 8-10" speaker is best to give good medium volume punchy bass but which type of box sealed, ported?

I'd go for sealed for fast and tight bass...you will need a speaker that's suited for such an enclosure though, and a fairly strong amp to get control of the speaker.

I've got a longthrow 10" in a 20 litre closed box, wedge shaped playing towards the rear, powered by a small ("cheater" amp) Audison 150 W RMS amp. Gives me a fairly loud and responsive bass. The best thing about closed boxes is that they tend to play very linear, meaning that you won't get that one note bass that most bandpass ones will give you.

Its easy enough to achieve really, all you need to do is buy a Vibe box with a 10'' in it and you will get just that. A tight thump with a box that is made very well.

Diamond audio subs are tight and really whack some punch, so too do Rockford Fosgate dual voice coils...they are pretty fierce punchers with a good amp and the coils remain tight.

It also depends on what sort of music you listen to....Nat King Cole requires some different setups to the likes of 2-Pac and Snoop Doggy Dog

I believe it is car dependent to some extent but the tightest bass I ever achieved was from four 8" paper coned JBL subs in a row in a sealed enclosure.

Cant remember dimensions but in my search to recreate it, I have found that the most important factor has been the paper cone.

 

Speaking very generally, sealed boxes give more "punch" than ported boxes.

Bandpass can give the same results, but designs are best left to those who have a clue. I've never attempted one.

 

current kit :
philips standard head unit and factory option philips cd changer on MY00 impreza.
JBL component GT6mk2(?) up front and standard rearsa and just about to put in rockford series 1 2x60w (x2600) amp connected to 10" kenwood sub in kenwood tuned ported box.

musical tastes are pretty varied wife likes classical (like you can hear any of it in a scoob!) and I like loads of stuff moby, verve, and dance etc.... but not into too heavy stuff.

as for budget, I don't need it to go too loud so nothing very expensive, I can turn my hand to MDF reasonably well (I think!) so could build a sub enclosure.

You're right about the 8 and 10" drivers.Put either of those in a small sealed enclosure,and you'll be good to go for everything but rap.
And if you like tight as much as I do,see if you can get a listen to some MTX 6000's[the silver ones].Push on the cone.VERY stiff.They have a sealed enclosure with three 10" in it and it kicks quite hard.
I run four of the 12" in one box,each having 1.25 cubes sealed and usually x'd over at 125hz,and it's like a punch in the head if you really kick on it.
just a thought.

 

Two 10 inch Diamond subs in box enclosure - best I've heard in a Scoob - needs extensive mods/soundproofing to get best results in Boot - as it rattles to bits

I recently replaced a ported JBL 12" sub unit with a sealed 12" rockford fosgate box. The JBL was somewhat 'flabby' although had good depth. The rockford is a lot tighter, much more controlled although there is some lack of depth compared to the JBL.

Kicker 10 inch Solobaric (square one) SL7 in sealed box. Very, very punchy, but needs a decent amp.

Easy fit into the side of a Scooby boot.

Got 2 'infinity perfect 10's' in two very small sealed enclosures (0.6 cubic foot each). They punch very hard and go soooooo low!! Driven by a phoenix gold amp.

Recommend them to anyone.

what kind of prices have people paid for the subs and amps?

I'm not looking for anything too expensive.

Got a 10" Kenwood in a small enclosure sealed box & it's spot on for the stuff i listen to punchy but nothing drastic(rear view mirror shakes a lot when its cranked up)

2x Alpine SWR304D 12" 1000watt subs in a single sealed box each.
YES it's rather loud.

 

price wise (and spec wise) mine isn't that special although I think it is a good start.

I paid £280 for a Rockford Fosgate Punch 120 amp, enclosure, 12" RF driver and RF wiring kit. That was from Quantum in Coventry, should have been around £360 but they have an offer on.

Headunit wise I have a pioneer deh-p7100 oel cd thingy and I replaced the factory speakers with pioneer ts-e series coaxial things, although I find them a bit harsh so they'll be going at some point in favour of some component stuff.

Am playing with this sort of thing at the moment. I have a Rockford Fosgate Power DVC 10" sub driver, which came with a sealed smallish box. I've since built my own ported larger box (1 cu ft) according to RF's own specs from their website and the sound is quite different. Higher sensitivity (more output/W) but seems a little softer than before - will have to try swapping back at some point. Sounds lurvely though - nice linear frequency response. Some ported boxes can sound boomy at the porting frequency but I don't seem to have that problem...

3 x JL Audio 10w6, sealed enclosure, run by Genesis Monoblock amp (which at 1ohm is firing 1200w into the subs)firing towards the back seat.
