I'm no ICE expert either, but changing the speakers will make a BIG difference, especially if you're installing a MD unit.
I went for Alpine stuff all round in my MY98 and its miles better than the standard garbage. Have a look at my website www.arnesta.freeserve.co.uk/hifi.htm for details of what I've got and how to fit it. Sony 6 x 9's should go in no trouble.

Can anyone out there help me. I've just got a pair of Sony 6x9" speakers thrown in with a new head unit. Does anyone know whether this size speaker will fit into the existing holes? I'm no ICE expert, but the current sound isn't great (standard Phillips head unit on MY98). I haven't fitted the new unit yet (Sony minidisc) so don't know whether this will make the difference to sound quality. Any views?

Thanks for the advice Tony. I'd seen in the FAQ that the rear speakers were a bit awkward to get at, and I didn't want to go through it and then find the speakers didn't fit. However, I'm told that 6x9"s are a standard size, so if your's fitted, so should mine I guess. BTW, your Scooby looks pretty nice - sounds OK too - nice touch
