Default Rear shelf completed (at last!)

Thanks to Nathan putting ideas into my head ( ), I decided to follow his lead and make a rear shelf to house my Infinity 6x9's. Well it is finally finished and looks very good ( even if I say so myself! ) As Nathan said earlier, it is not an easy project to do but I think the results speak for themselves.

I bet it sounds really good.

Did you amp the Infinity 6x9's?

How easy is it to get the rear shelf out? are there any instructions/links on here showing how?

Also what are the infinitys like? + what speakers you got up front?

Thanx Duracell

Thanks chaps, I haven't connected them up yet - still waiting for my Los Angeles to arrive. Chiark, does it make much difference in the quality of an amp? I'm under the impression an amp is an amp . Also, what output would you recommend? I'm not into the teeth-clenching, oomp-oomp music and was thinking about 2 x 100 / 150? The removal of the rear shelf is the easiest part - it is simply a case of removing the side-panels and lifting it out. I've shoved in some Infinity 605cs up front. They sound crap at the minute, due to the h/unit but when that LA arrives.......

To a large extent a good quality amp is a good quality amp. Look for a brand name that you're aware of, or something from a good quality manufacturer, and you can't go terribly badly wrong. The speakers make much more difference.

Saying that, I would personally recommend looking at buying a good quality second hand amp. Genesis, Phoenix Gold, Soundstream leap to mind as amps that I like, but that list is not exhaustive.

Don't put the rears too loud, otherwise you'll destroy your sound stage.

Cheers,
Nick.

I've actually run the Infinity 605CS of my Alpine Head unit. I ended up mounting the tweeters on the little plastic inserts that cover the wing mirror mounting points. It lifts the sound stage higher and sounds much better IMHO.

It was only a temp soloution whilst I did the rear shelf but now it's all done I actually quite like it.

I've amped up my Infinity 6951i 6x9s using a Kenwood 4 way amp bridged to 150w per channel.

Overall I faded the sound to the front by a couple of notches and it sounds great. Very punchy mid bass and crisp high end notes.

Cabling throughout is high end Phoenix Gold stuff.

Nathan, where did you mount your amp? I was thinking about attaching it to another piece of MDF, mounted underneath the rear shelf near the boot light. Can you or Chiark see any possible problems with that?

Can't see any problems personally, as long as the amp has good ventilation.

I mounted mine on the carpet area to the OS of the centre arm rest cut out.

Drilled four small holes then bolted through the carpet and through a 10mm MDF template. When you do the bolts up it pulls up really well and looks good.

Wouldn't bolt the amp upside down under the parcel shelf. They need to dissipate the heat generated.

Piece of carpet covered MDF bolted to the rear of the back seat is my solution.
