Underneath the metal of the shelf yes. In the holes on the shelf, no.

i am not sure how they are gonna be fitted, i spoke to the guy about 6 x 9s, said he would make it look like there is nothing in there using audio cloth/carpet to recover the shelf, I dont know if that meant he would put them in the holes, or below them? if 6 x 9s wont go in the holes either then i guess it doesnt matter either way, but if 6 x 9s fit then i better check, thanks

Jason,

Either your installer is going to fit very shallow 6x9s or there's no way you can fit them flush either above the metal shelf or on the hardboard shelf. The hole in the metal shelf just won't accomodate the magnet of a 6x9 if you want them flush.

You can fit then on the existing shelf using spacers, or build a new MDF shelf though you may still need spacers. Mounting from below does work though.

i guess he was going to mount from underneath and then cut out holes in the shelf and then cover it with this audio carpet, as he never even asked what type of speakers, he just suggest one or 2 and then said i can buy them myself if i want and then bring them to him

So he's gonna mount them from below and cut the cardboard shelf to get the sounds in to the cabin? He'll have to remove the current covering of the cardboard shelf and recover it, as you say.

I'm with Chiark - you don't want him cutting the holes in the metal shelf to fit the things in if you can help it. In fact, it could be dangerous, as enlargening the hole will encroach on a reinforced part of the shelf that is used to support the centre seatbelt. (on my pics I have cut around it if you notice)

so the question is, if hes fitting below, and not cutting metal, recovering the shelf, i think he called it an acoustic shelf, will 7x10s be ok? or 6x9s? and will i get enough sound into the car to make it all worthwhile??

Your front setup is the most important. Get that sorted out before playing with the rear, so to speak.

what more can i do at the front? i bought what seemed to be like pretty expensive set of components?? ok im going to change the head unit but im not going to start with amps and so on, so the way i see it, apart from buy new front speakers, not sure what else i can do?? i am going to order an alpine head unit today from cel direct, seems to have decent power 60w x 4 so that should sort out the dodgy head unit problem, thought i would order the 6 x 9s while im at it, or you think i should wait??

What head unit do you have already?

Have you checked phasing? Attentuated the tweeters? Checked the mounting of the midbass drivers?

The solution isn't necessarily chucking money at the problem.

ok chiark, yes i need to bin the head unit, its panasonic cd player, not a quality one, but says 45x4 output.

what do you mean about mounting of mid bass? if you mean the mounting of the components as thats all i have, then its spaced out with spacers and is fitted solid. I think one of them is to close to door card as it vibrates when on a little louder.

Attenuating the tweeters, not sure about that either however i can fade down the treble its no big thing, i want more bass, thats why i was thinking 6x9 for rear shelf to give some bass and the front can supply the treble, all with a better head unit of course, the one i have cost less than 100quid new it was in teh car when i got it, importers throwing cheap **** in thre
