Is DAB any good? Ive looked on the net and got mixed responses.
Halfrauds are doing a Blaupunkt Woodstock (DAB) CD Tuner
price: £239.99 Here which includes free fitting and arial.

Has anyone got this head unit fitted. Seems to good to be true!!!

Thumbs up

Yep, I've got a Woodstock DAB52. It was installed in my last car, and worked well, for some reason though, now it's in my Wagon, it's taking several seconds to turn off once the ignition's turned off so I'll be checking the connections soon.

At the moment I'm just listening to MP3s , recorded at 128 or 192k, and they sound fine to me, and as soon as I can work out how to remove the right bits of trim to fit the glass-mount aerial to the offside rear window, I'll be listening to DAB again .

A few weeks ago I drove from Shropshire to Newark and back, listening to Planet Rock, and only had 1 break-up lasting for about a second. Some of the local DAB stations give me problems when I go under bridges, but as I tend to listen to Planet Rock, The Storm or BBC 6 Music, it's a price I'm willing to pay for my musical tastes.

As for the price, I can only assume they're stock clearing ready for the DAB53, but for £100 less than I paid, go for it.

Tony, did you buy the Woodstock in the end?

I'm seriously tempted to buy/order one from Halfordss later today (money in pocket as i type). The only slight worryi have is how professional an install do Halfords do?

Fitting the HU is pretty easy but i'm wondering how neat a job they do routing the cable for the DAB antenna (on rear windscreen) under the carpets and behind the panels. Also, what's the antenna like - i haven't seen any pictures of them anywhere and am hoping it's not a total eyesore!

Iwan, anyone who is fitting something cheaply as possible will take shortcuts. I'm not saying this is the case, but I would fit the unit yourself as then you know that it has been done properly.

I'd be happy enough fitting it as i'm an electronics engineer by trade, it's the removing and re-fitting of carpets/trim i'm more worried about.

I think Halfords may have priced it up wrong the other day, the page at the clicky in the top post showed it as £239 the other day - it's back up to £299 now. Doh, I should have ordered it strait away!

What MY have you got? If it's an 01+, the trim is very, very easy to work with. Prior to that it's still easy, but is slightly less well put together so takes a bit more effort to get back absolutely properly IMHO.

Tony,

I posted a similar thread not long ago and got some pretty downbeat responses about coverage and in car quality.

My home based one is worth every penny. But the car based one seems to be not up to it at the moment for the outlay, especially if you travel a lot. So I'm saving the cash at the moment.. as I do believe they will take off when the coverage and amount of stations gets better.

Take a look here... Clicky

Alan C

Thanks for the clicky. Ive had my Woodstock DAB fitted for almost 2 weeks now and its great. I can pick up about 20 stations and
they hardly ever drop out. I do live reasonabily close to London (40 miles) maybe thats why. Im of to my parents in Dorset today so i will be able to test the set on a long journey.

Tony

Another advantage to living Darn Sarf!!

But then again, there are LOTS of disadvantages too!

I've lived in Uxbridge for many years, and the quality of life is so much better up here (West Yorkshire), especially as I only have to travel 15 mins to work rather than 50+ mins to get 10 miles..

But that's another thread...!

But DAB coverage is poor up here 7-8 stations.. when that improves along with Power output to improve overall reception then I may consider moving to DAB.. just for the quality in BBC 5 Live really.
