Question

I have recently purchased a Impreza Turbo (4 dr Saloon).
I have noticed that the rear speakers, even though round, acutally fit through 6x9 holes with a blanking plates.
The problem is probably simple, but I cannot remove the upper parcel shelf that covers the speaker screws. It seems to be fixed down under the back of the seats.

Can anyone help me?

Click on the search button on the bulletin board and look for 'parcel shelf' there are lots of historical threads with detailed instructions on how to do it.

It is fixed in, and it's a swine to get out . In short, remove the base of the back seat, then remove the rear of the back seat (3 bolts - don't forget the middle one - then lift upwards). Remove the trim by the side of the rear window then hey presto you find that your parcel shelf is probably stuck on some of the window sealant. A careful trim with a stanley knife helps...

Of course, there's a large faction who advocate not bothering with rear speakers, myself included. Do the search and you'll find out why

Adam.

If you've got a 22B now you'd better be coming up to Leeds sharpish! Bring Scott too. Northern Meet IV on 24 September?

Agree with the sentiments about imaging, especially having upgraded my home amp, but you can still get a semblance of good imaging in a car. NB: I'm not there yet

22b. Harumph. Overrated in my books.

Another point: some 6x9s fit, some don't. Check before parting with moolah! Some people have had to make a small mounting ring to raise the speakers up a bit to give clearance for the basket.

If you're around at Northern Meet IV, you can see (well, hear ) the difference between having rear speakers and not having rear speakers.

They're useful for keeping people in the back happy, but that's about it.

Whilst I'm on a roll, if I were president I'd abolish this tax on fuel lark.

I am a founder member of the anti rear speakers brigade, but would you believe in my 22B I have decided to retain the rear speakers and ditch the sub.

I have decided to founder a purist brigade which requires people who have been into car audio but are now so into home hifi that they realise no car is worth trying to get to image properly as they will never match a golden ratio room for accoustics.

The holy grail can never be reached. give up now guys, it isnt worth trying.

Whats the problem with having rear speakers?
I am transfering my 6x9's, head unit, sub and amp from my old hatch back, where they sounded great. I prefered the rear speakers to having front speakers.
Does it sound different in a saloon or is it just personal preference?

Your home hi-fi is normally in front of you. To get any type of stereo effect, this is the best place for it .

Speakers in the front of a car give a stereo image of sorts which you'll never get with rear speakers.

If you fit rear speakers as well as front speakers, my limited experience is that you have the things faded out so low that they might as well not be there. Leaving them at the same volume level knackers any soundstage that you have.

It depends whether you want your car to sound like all the sounds coming from the back. I don't. That's about the size of it.

You may have fun fitting your 6x9s too. Again, search and you'll find all the info about that.

NB: I ignored people and fitted speakers in the rear. Wish I hadn't bothered.
