std cd changer vs new head units

I don't think I can stand the standard head unit any longer.
Quite fancy a decent mini-disc head unit, but don't really want to have fork out for a new CD changer.
Is the one that you get with the car (if you specified it), a Phillips unit I think, compatible with other stuff, eg Sony, Panasonic?
